How Can We Keep Holiness in a Relationship?

In a world that is becoming increasingly free and permissive, keeping holiness in a relationship can feel like swimming against a strong current. Modern culture normalizes premarital sex, living together before marriage, and love without commitment. But as Christians, we are not called to follow the current, but to be light and salt in the midst of a dark world. So the question is: how can we keep holiness in a relationship, especially when feelings of love are so strong?

The answer does not begin with outward rules, but with a heart that truly longs to please God.

1. Holiness Is Rooted in Our Love for God

Holiness is not merely avoiding sexual sin. Holiness is an attitude of the heart that wants to please God in everything. In 1 Thessalonians 4:3, Paul writes, โ€œFor this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.โ€

This means that keeping holiness is part of our obedience to Godโ€™s will. If love for God becomes the center of our relationship, then we will gladly say “no” to things that can defile the soul.

2. Set Boundaries from the Start

Many Christian couples fall not because they do not love God, but because they do not set clear boundaries from the beginning. Our bodies were created by God with instincts and desires, but God also gave us reason and self-control.

In 2 Timothy 2:22, we are reminded to โ€œflee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace…โ€ So, decide together on healthy boundaries: no sleeping together, no sensual hugging, no being alone in closed places, and no accessing content that stirs lust.

Not because we fear the law, but because we honor God and our partner.

3. Involve God in Every Aspect of the Relationship

One of the most effective ways to keep holiness is to make our relationship a form of worship. Praying together, reading the Bible, spiritual discussions, and even future plans grounded in Godโ€™s willโ€”all of these will strengthen the commitment to live in the light.

A relationship based only on feelings is vulnerable to compromise. But a relationship planted in the Word will produce the fruit of holiness. As written in Psalm 119:9, โ€œHow can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.โ€

4. Avoid Temptation Actively, Not Passively

It is not enough just to intend to keep holiness. We must actively protect ourselves from situations that can make us fall. Temptation is not a sign of weak faith, but part of human reality. Even Joseph chose to run from Potipharโ€™s wife (Genesis 39), not argue or stand firm.

So do not play with fire. If there are apps, movies, music, or habits that open the door to falling, get rid of them. If friends weaken our faith, keep your distance. It is better to lose worldly comfort than to lose intimacy with God.

5. The Importance of Community and Accountability

Do not fight alone. Christian couples need to be surrounded by a healthy and spiritually mature community. Friends who can advise, pray, and even lovingly correct when you begin to go off course.

James 5:16 says, โ€œTherefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.โ€ Accountability is not control, but protection. This is Godโ€™s way of keeping us walking on the right path.

6. If You Have Already Fallen, There Is Still a Way Back

If you feel you have crossed the line and fallen into sin, do not give up. Godโ€™s love is far greater than our failures. 1 John 1:9 gives a hope-filled promise: โ€œIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.โ€

Start again with sincere repentance. Rebuild the relationship on the foundation of holiness. God is able to restore.

Conclusion: Holiness Is Possible and Beautiful

Keeping holiness in a relationship is not easy, but it is not impossible. With commitment, healthy boundaries, supportive community, and love rooted in Christ, we can build a relationship that is not only romantic, but also spiritual and holy.

Because in the end, true love is not only about belonging to one another, but about bringing one another closer to God.
