Holy living often sounds like an old-fashioned concept or something only suitable for great figures in the Bible. But in reality, holy living is a calling for every believer, including us who live in this modern age, amidst all the distractions of technology, social pressures, and the flow of worldly values that often contradict Christian values.
What does holy living mean?
Holy living does not mean living without sin at all, but it means a life set apart for God, a life directed to please Him, not merely following the desires of the world. In 1 Peter 1:15-16 it is written, “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
Challenges in the modern era
Today, we live in a world that normalizes sin, ranging from pornography, small deceptions, to a consumerist lifestyle that never knows satisfaction. Social media often causes us to compare our lives with others and ultimately lose focus on God. However, it is precisely amid these challenges that holy living becomes a real light to the world (Matthew 5:14-16).
Practical steps for holy living today
- Renew your mind daily with God’s word (Romans 12:2). Take time to read and meditate on the Bible so that God’s values take root in the way we think and act.
- Avoid small compromises. Holy living begins with small things: choosing honesty when no one is watching, guarding your eyes and thoughts, and controlling your words.
- Associate with people who support your faith. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Bad company corrupts good habits.” We need a community that supports our spiritual growth.
- Repent and remain humble before God. Holy living is not about perfection, but about continual repentance and a heart willing to be changed by the Holy Spirit.
Being holy does not mean being strange or perfect, but means being available for God’s use. Our lives may not be free from ups and downs, but as long as our hearts are continually directed toward Christ and we keep surrendering to Him, we are living the holy life that God desires.
Do not be afraid if you feel like you have failed along the way. Philippians 1:6 encourages us, “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
