This question often arises among congregations and ministers: is someone called to be a servant of God required to attend theological school? Or can someone serve God fully without a theological degree?
The answer is not as simple as yes or no. Let us discuss it from several perspectives.
1. Theological School Is Not an Absolute Requirement, But Can Be a Blessing
The Bible shows that many figures were used by God without formal religious education. Peter, John, and several apostles were known as fishermen and ordinary people (Acts 4:13). Yet they were transformed because they “had been with Jesus”. This means that a personal closeness to Christ is the main foundation in ministry, not merely a degree or institution.
However, theological school can be an important tool to equip someone to understand God’s word correctly, avoid false teachings, and learn to shepherd the congregation wisely. Like Paul, who was highly educated in the law and was used by God extraordinarily, theological education can be a means God uses, as long as it is accompanied by humility and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
2. The Most Important: God’s Calling and Divine Character
Many people feel “called” to be servants of God, but it is important to test that calling, not just based on momentary emotions or personal desires. A servant of God needs to demonstrate character that aligns with Biblical criteria (1 Timothy 3:1-7), such as an above-reproach life, ability to teach, and managing their family well.
Theological school cannot replace character. An M.Th degree does not guarantee a humble heart, love for God’s sheep, or faithfulness when no one is watching. True ministry is born from an intimate relationship with God.
3. Real Ministry Does Not Depend on Certificates
There are many servants of God in remote areas, villages, or even in closed countries who have never experienced formal education, yet they are used extraordinarily because of their faithfulness and deep relationship with God. They may not know Greek or Hebrew, but they have a obedient heart and an anointing from the Holy Spirit.
However, in urban contexts or broader ministries such as teaching, mentoring other servants of God, or writing spiritual books, theological education can be very helpful to maintain doctrinal accuracy and a healthy ministry approach.
Conclusion: Need Theological Schooling? Not Mandatory, But Very Useful
Servants of God are not required to attend theological school to serve, but if there is an opportunity and God’s calling to go there, it is a great blessing. However, the most important remains an obedient heart, a genuine Christ-like character, and absolute dependence on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Theological school can train the mind, but only the Holy Spirit can shape the heart.
