If God is truly good, why is this world full of tears? Why are there disasters, diseases, loss, and emotional wounds that seem never to heal? This question arises not because of a lack of faith, but because the human heart truly needs an answer. This article is not meant to provide rigid theological explanations, but to reach out to you who are hurting — with love and honesty that come from God’s word.
1. This World Is Not As God Originally Planned
When God created the world, everything was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). There was no sickness, no death, no crying. However, when humans chose to walk on their own and disobey God’s will, sin entered the world. As a result, imperfection began to dominate that perfect creation.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Sin damages the originally harmonious order. Not only is the relationship between humans and God broken, but also relationships with others, nature, and even with oneself.
2. Suffering Does Not Mean God Does Not Care
Many think, “If God cares, why doesn’t He stop all suffering right now?” This question is valid. But consider this: if every evil act were instantly stopped by God, would humans truly be free?
God gives us free will, and that is what makes love for Him sincere. Unfortunately, that freedom is often misused. However, that does not mean God remains silent.
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:19)
He does not eliminate suffering, but He enters into that suffering with us. He does not just watch from afar, but is present and supports.
3. Jesus Himself Suffered
This is the great difference between the Christian faith and other philosophies. Our God does not only rule from heaven, but comes down to earth, becomes human, and experiences suffering like us.
“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.” (Isaiah 53:3)
Jesus knows what it feels like to be rejected, betrayed, hurt, even to die in the most painful way. This means that when you cry, you cry with a God who understands.
4. Suffering Can Be a Place of Growth
Although it sounds cliché, many people actually grow through suffering. When all comforts are taken away, that is when many begin to open their hearts and realize how much they need God.
“My brothers and sisters, consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds.” (James 1:2)
Suffering does not always come as punishment. Sometimes, it is a process of purification. Just as gold is refined by fire, so our faith is strengthened during difficult times.
5. Suffering Will Not Last Forever
God’s promise is not a world without tears right now, but a new world that will one day be free from all suffering. That promise is real and will never fail.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death.” (Revelation 21:4)
The pain you are experiencing now is not the end of the story. God is writing a greater story, and you are an important part of that story.
Closing: God Is Good, Even Though the World Is Not Always So
So, if God is good, why is there suffering? Because this world has been broken by sin, but God does not remain silent. He is present, He cares, and He gives hope. We may cry, question, even doubt, but do not let go of His hand. Because in the midst of the storm, His hand is the only one truly reliable.
If you are at your darkest point, believe that God’s light never goes out. It may not be immediately visible, but He is working. Keep hoping, because hope will not disappoint.
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 5:5)
