Curiosity: A Sign of Weak Faith or the Beginning of Growth?
Have you ever felt doubt about something in the Christian faith? Maybe about God’s justice, the content of the Bible, or why prayers have not been answered. Many people think that asking questions or doubting faith is a sin, as if faith must always be certain without any gaps. But is that really true?
It turns out that asking questions is not a sign of weak faith, but rather the first step toward stronger faith. Even Jesus Himself did not reject people who came with confusion and questions. In Mark 9:24, a father said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” This is not a rejection of God, but honesty that leads to help.
Biblical Figures Also Experienced Doubt
We often forget that great figures in the Bible also experienced doubt. For example, Thomas, who was nicknamed “the doubter” (John 20:24-29). He wanted to see the nail marks in Jesus’ hands before believing. However, Jesus did not harshly rebuke Thomas; instead, He showed His hands with love. From there came an extraordinary confession of faith: “My Lord and my God!”
David also often questioned God in the Psalms. He cried, was angry, even felt that God was far away, yet in the end, he still relied on Him. So it is clear, questions are not sin. In fact, from those questions, God leads us to spiritual maturity.
God Is Not Afraid of Being Questioned
Our God is not a God who is anti-criticism or easily offended. He invites us to seek Him: “Seek me and live” (Amos 5:4). Faith that grows does not come from blind obedience, but from deep knowledge, and that knowledge is born from dialogue.
If we are afraid to ask questions, we will stagnate. But if we bring those questions before God with a sincere heart, we are nurturing a faith that endures testing. As it is written in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.”
True Faith Grows Through a Process
Faith is not something that matures instantly. It grows like a seed that is planted, watered, and processed. In that process, questions become an important part. We ask not because we want to leave God, but because we want to know Him better.
Questions and doubts can be the gateway to a deeper encounter with God. So, do not be afraid to ask. God understands and embraces us, even when our faith is not yet whole. He is patient and faithful.
