Is There Such a Thing as ‘Negative Energy’? A Scientific and Spiritual Perspective

We often hear the term “negative energy” in everyday conversations. For example, when someone says a room feels full of negative energy, or there is a person who makes the atmosphere heavy. But what exactly is meant by negative energy? Is it just an expression of feeling, or is there a scientific and spiritual basis behind the term?

Scientific Perspective: More Than Just a Feeling

In the world of science, energy is defined as the ability to do work. There is no classification such as “positive energy” or “negative energy” in the context of physics. However, modern psychology recognizes the term negative emotions, such as anger, fear, anxiety, or sadness. These emotions can affect mood and even physical health. Research shows that when someone is in an environment filled with stress or conflict, the body responds with increased cortisol hormone, elevated blood pressure, and a weakened immune system.

Environments with much conflict or negative thoughts scientifically do have a harmful impact on human well-being. So, the term โ€œnegative energyโ€ can actually reflect an accumulated emotional atmosphere that has a real effect on the body and mind.

Biblical Perspective: Spirit, Mind, and Atmosphere

In the Bible, the term โ€œnegative energyโ€ is not directly mentioned, but there are many references to spirit, mood, and the fruits of life that arise from a personโ€™s inner condition. Ephesians 4:31-32 reminds us, โ€œLet all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. But be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.โ€

This verse highlights the importance of guarding the heartโ€™s condition so as not to fall into destructive emotions. When a personโ€™s heart is full of anger or bitterness, the atmosphere around them is also affected. In Galatians 5:22-23, we are reminded of the fruit of the Spirit, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When these fruits are present in our lives, the โ€œenergyโ€ that radiates brings peace.

Changing the Atmosphere from Within

If we desire an environment free from โ€œnegative energy,โ€ the change must begin from within ourselves. A renewed mind and a clean heart will produce a healthy response to lifeโ€™s situations. Romans 12:2 advises, โ€œDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.โ€

When we choose to live in the light of Christ, forgiveness, and love, we become a source of calm amid the worldโ€™s unrest. Science and faith agree that the mind and mood have great power to influence our lives and those around us.

Conclusion: Not Mystical, But Real

โ€œNegative energyโ€ is not something mystical, but an emotional and spiritual reality. Science views it as an accumulation of stress responses and negative emotions, while the Bible directs us to examine the heart and develop the fruit of the Spirit. When we realize that moods can be โ€œcontagious,โ€ we are called to be bearers of peace and light in a troubled world.
