A shoot will come forth from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.

The Spirit of the LORD will rest upon him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD;
3
yes, his delight will be in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide by what his ears hear.
4
But with righteousness he will judge the poor,
and decide with fairness for the meek of the land;
he will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.

Righteousness and faithfulness will be the belt around his waist,
as a sash fastened about his loins.

The wolf will dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard will lie down with the young goat.
The calf and the young lion will feed together,
and a little child will lead them.

The cow and the bear will graze together,
and their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

The nursing child will play near the cobra’s den,
and the weaned child will put his hand into the viper’s nest.

They will not do evil or act corruptly
in all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea.

In that day
the root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
the nations will seek him,
and his resting place will be glorious.
11
In that day the Lord will again lift up his hand
to recover the remnant of his people
who remain in Assyria and in Egypt,
in Pathros, in Cush, and in Elam,
in Shinar, in Hamath, and in the islands of the sea.
12
He will raise a banner for the nations,
will gather the outcasts of Israel,
and will assemble the scattered people of Judah
from the four corners of the earth.
13
The jealousy of Ephraim will depart,
and those who harass Judah will be cut off.
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah anymore,
and Judah will not harass Ephraim anymore.
14
But they will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia toward the west;
together they will plunder the people of the East.
They will lay hands on Edom and Moab,
and the people of Ammon will be subject to them.
15
The LORD will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea
with the scorching breath of his mouth,
and he will wave his hand over the River Euphrates,
and strike it into seven streams,
so that people may cross over in sandals.

Then there will be a highway for the remnant of His people
who remain in Assyria,
as there was for Israel in former days,
at the time they came up out of the land of Egypt.
