Isaiah 35

Isaiah 35 – Salvation for the Lord’s People

1
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,
the desert shall rejoice and blossom;

2
like the rose it shall blossom abundantly,
it shall rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
they shall see the glory of the LORD,
the splendor of our God.

3
Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.

4
Say to those who are of a fearful heart:
“Be strong, fear not!
Behold, your God will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He himself will come and save you!”

5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped.

6
Then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy;
for waters shall break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;

7
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,
there shall be grass with reeds and rushes.

8
And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Holy Way;
the unclean shall not pass over it,
and fools shall not wander on it.

9
No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.

10
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

🌸🕊️🏞️ Summary of Isaiah 35 – The Desert Rejoices, the Holy Way Leads to Restoration
After the dark picture of judgment in Isaiah 34, chapter 35 stands in beautiful contrast: a promise of restoration and joy for the people of God. It is a prophecy of the time when the wilderness blossoms, the weak are strengthened, the blind see, the lame leap, and the people walk the Holy Way to Zion. This is a picture of the fullness of eschatological salvation — fulfilled in Christ and in the hope of eternity.

📌 1. The Rejoicing Wilderness (verses 1–2)

“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad…”

  • The desert and barren land blossom like the rose
  • Creation itself glorifies the Lord because of His restoration
  • The glory of Lebanon, the beauty of Carmel and Sharon, will be given to it

🎯 The Lord’s restoration turns places of death into places of life.

📌 2. Strengthen the Weak! (verses 3–4)

“Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees!”

  • A call for the people to strengthen one another in hope
  • The Lord will come with vengeance, but also with salvation

🎯 In times of crisis, faith and hope become strength that upholds one another.

📌 3. Signs of Salvation (verses 5–6a)

“Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened…”

  • Eyes opened, ears unstopped, the lame leaping, the mute singing for joy
  • This pictures spiritual and physical transformation by the power of God

🎯 These are the signs of the coming of the Messiah and the kingdom of God (see Matthew 11:5).

📌 4. Water and the Holy Way in the Wilderness (verses 6b–10)

“In the wilderness waters shall break forth…”

  • Waters spring up in the barren land — a sign of life and the Holy Spirit
  • There will be a Holy Way traveled only by the redeemed
  • That way is safe, with no lion, and full of joy toward Zion

🎯 Salvation is not only an end, but a journey prepared and guarded by the Lord.

📖 Main Lessons

  • The Lord has power to turn the wilderness of our lives into a garden of joy

  • The people of God are called to strengthen one another in hope
