After this Jesus went about in Galilee, for He would not remain in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.

So His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples also may see the works that You do.
4
For no one does anything in secret when he seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

For even His brothers did not believe in Him.

Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always at hand.
7
The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that its works are evil.
8
Go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast yet, because My time has not yet fully come.”

Having said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

But after His brothers had gone up to the feast, He also went up there, not openly but in secret.

The Jews were looking for Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?”
12
And there was much whispering among the crowds about Him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “No, He is misleading the people.”
13
Yet no one spoke openly about Him for fear of the Jews.

About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

The Jews were amazed and said, “How does this man have such learning, having never studied?”

Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
17
If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know whether this teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.
18
The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory, but the one who seeks the glory of Him who sent him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
19
Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill Me?”
20
The crowd answered, “You have a demon; who is seeking to kill You?”
21
Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it.
22
Moses gave you circumcision — not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers — and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath!”

If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with Me because I made a man’s whole body well on the Sabbath?
24
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with righteous judgment.”

Some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Is not this the one they are seeking to kill?
26
And look, He speaks openly, and they say nothing to Him. Can it be that our rulers have truly come to know that He is the Christ?
27
But as for this man, we know where He comes from; yet when the Christ comes, no one will know where He comes from.”
28
While Jesus was teaching in the temple, He cried out, “You both know Me and know where I come from; yet I have not come of My own will, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
29
I know Him, because I come from Him, and He sent Me.”

So they sought to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
31
But many in the crowd believed in Him, and they said, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than this man has done?”
32
The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and for that reason the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers of the temple to seize Him.
33
Then Jesus said, “I will be with you only a little while longer, and then I will go to Him who sent Me.
34
You will seek Me, but you will not find Me, because you cannot come to the place where I am.”
35
The Jews said to one another, “Where is He going that we will not find Him? Does He intend to go to those who live in the dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
36
What does He mean by this saying: You will seek Me, but you will not find Me, and: You cannot come to the place where I am?”
37
On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink!
38
Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

He said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit had not yet come, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Some of the people in the crowd, who heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet who is to come.”
41
Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But others said, “No, the Messiah does not come from Galilee!
42
For the Scripture says that the Messiah comes from the line of David and from the village of Bethlehem, where David once lived.”

So there was a division among the people because of Him.

Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one dared to lay hands on Him.

Then the guards went to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”
46
The guards answered, “No man has ever spoken like this man!”

The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been led astray?
48
Has any of the rulers believed in Him, or any of the Pharisees?
49
But this crowd, which does not know the Law, is accursed!”

Nicodemus, one of them, who had earlier come to Him, said to them:

“Does our Law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he has done?”

They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search the Scriptures, and you will see that no prophet has come out of Galilee.”
