Isaiah 4

Isaiah 4 – Jerusalem Cleansed and Protected

1
In that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothing; only let us be called by your name; take away our reproach.”

2
In that day the Branch of the LORD shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and honor of the survivors of Israel.

3
And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and he who remains in Jerusalem shall be called holy, every one who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem,

4
when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and shall have purged the bloodguilt of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning.

5
Then the LORD will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud by day, and smoke, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be a covering.

6
And there shall be a booth for shade by day from the heat, and for a refuge and a shelter from storm and rain.

🌱🔥👰 Summary of Isaiah 4 – The Branch of the LORD and Holy Restoration for the Remnant
Isaiah 4 is a short chapter, yet it is very strong and full of hope. After the judgment in chapter 3, there now comes a promise of restoration: the Lord will raise up a Branch in glory, cleanse His people, and establish a holy protection like in the days of the Exodus. This picture points to the Messiah, and to a people called to live in holiness before God.

📌 1. The Condition after Judgment (verse 1)

“Seven women shall take hold of one man…”

  • After disaster and the death of many men, there is a social crisis
  • The women are even willing to provide for themselves if only they may bear a husband’s name — showing the breaking down of society’s order

🎯 When a nation turns away from the Lord, social order also collapses, and shame covers all.

📌 2. The Appearance of the “Branch of the LORD” and Restoration (verse 2)

“The Branch of the LORD shall be beautiful and glorious…”

  • “Branch” in the Bible often refers to the Messiah (Jesus Christ)
  • There will be glory and new life for the people who are saved — “the fruit of the land” will be pride and honor

🎯 The Messiah is a new hope after judgment — life will rise again out of ruin.

📌 3. The Purifying of the People by the Spirit of Judgment and Burning (verses 3–4)

“He who is left… shall be called holy…”

  • The Lord will cleanse Zion from sin and bloodguilt by fire and spirit
  • This describes a spiritual refining — cleansing that is not only moral but also spiritual

🎯 Only those whom the Lord has made holy are fit to dwell in His holy place.

📌 4. The Lord Becomes a Protection for His People (verses 5–6)

“The LORD will create a cloud and smoke by day… and the shining of flaming fire by night…”

  • This recalls the pillar of cloud and pillar of fire in Exodus — a sign of God’s presence and protection
  • The Lord becomes a shade, a hiding place, and a shelter from heat and storm

🎯 After repentance and cleansing, God’s people live under the covering of His loving and mighty presence.

📖 Main Teaching

  • After judgment, the Lord provides restoration and new life
  • The Messiah (the Branch of the LORD) is the source of glory and spiritual beauty
  • God’s people must be made holy to enjoy His presence
  • The presence of God is a place of refuge and comfort in every season of life
  • The Lord continues to preserve a faithful “remnant”
