“But now hear, O Jacob, My servant,
and Israel, whom I have chosen!

Thus says the LORD who made you,
who formed you from the womb and who helps you:
Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,
and Jeshurun, whom I have chosen!
3
For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
and streams on the dry ground.
I will pour My Spirit on your offspring,
and My blessing on your descendants.
4
They will spring up among the grass,
like willows by flowing streams.
5
One will say, ‘I belong to the LORD,’
another will call himself by the name of Jacob,
and another will write on his hand, ‘Belonging to the LORD,’
and will take the name of Israel as his own.”

Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel,
the LORD of hosts:
“I am the first and I am the last;
besides Me there is no God.
7
Who is like Me? Let him proclaim it,
let him declare it and set it before Me!
Who has announced from of old the things to come?
What is to happen, let them tell us!
8
Do not tremble and do not fear,
for from long ago I have told you and declared it to you.
You are My witnesses!
Is there a God besides Me?
There is no other Rock; I know of none.”
9
Those who fashion idols are all nothing,
and the things they delight in do not profit.
Their witnesses neither see nor know anything;
therefore they will be put to shame.
10
Who fashions a god and casts an idol that can do no good?
11
Indeed, all who follow them will be put to shame,
and the craftsmen are only human.
Let them all gather together and stand up!
They will be terrified and put to shame together.
12
The blacksmith works it in the coals,
and shapes it with hammers;
he labors over it with all the strength of his arm.
Even so he grows hungry and his strength fails;
he drinks no water and becomes faint.
13
The carpenter stretches out a line and marks out the shape with red chalk;
he works it with a chisel and marks it with a compass,
then gives it the form of a man,
like a handsome human being,
and sets it in a shrine.
14
He may cut down cedars, or choose a cypress tree or an oak,
and let it grow strong among the trees of the forest,
or he may plant a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.
15
And its wood becomes fuel for a man;
he uses it to warm himself;
indeed, he kindles it to bake bread.
But he also makes it into a god and worships it;
he fashions it into an idol and bows down to it.
16
Half of it he burns in the fire, and over it he roasts meat.
Then he eats the roasted meat until he is full;
he warms himself and says:
“Ah, I am warm; I have felt the heat of the fire.”
17
And the rest of the wood he makes into a god,
into his carved image;
he bows down to it, he worships it and prays to it, saying:
“Save me, for you are my god!”
18
Such people know nothing and understand nothing,
for their eyes are shut, so that they cannot see,
and their hearts are closed, so that they cannot understand.
19
No one takes it to heart,
there is no knowledge or understanding enough to say:
“Half of it I have burned in the fire, and also on its coals I have baked bread;
I have roasted meat and eaten it.
Shall I make the rest into a detestable god?
Shall I bow down to dry wood?”
20
He feeds on ashes; a deceived heart has led him astray;
he cannot save his soul or say:
“Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?”
21
Remember these things, O Jacob,
for you are My servant, O Israel.
I have formed you; you are My servant;
O Israel, you shall not be forgotten by Me.
22
I have wiped away all your rebellious sins like a mist driven off by the wind,
and all your sins like a cloud blown away.
Return to Me, for I have redeemed you!
23
Sing for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has acted;
shout aloud, O depths of the earth!
Break forth into singing, O mountains,
O forest and every tree in it!
For the LORD has redeemed Jacob,
and He has shown His glory in Israel.
24
Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer,
who formed you from the womb:
“I am the LORD, who made all things,
who alone stretched out the heavens,
who spread out the earth — who was with Me? —
25
I am the one who frustrates the signs of lying diviners
and makes fools of fortune-tellers;
who turns wise men back,
and makes their knowledge into foolishness;
26
I am the one who confirms the word of My servants
and carries out the counsel announced by My messengers;
who says of Jerusalem, ‘Let it be inhabited!’
and of the cities of Judah, ‘Let them be built,
I will raise up their ruins!”
27
I am the one who says to the deep sea, ‘Be dry;
I will dry up your rivers!’
28
I am the one who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd;
he shall carry out all my will,’
by saying of Jerusalem, ‘Let it be rebuilt!’
and of the temple, ‘Let its foundation be laid!’”
