Hear this word, O house of Jacob,
who are called by the name of Israel
and who came from the line of Judah,
who swear by the name of the LORD
and confess the God of Israel—
but not in truth and not in righteousness—

indeed, they call themselves after the holy city
and lean on the God of Israel;
the LORD of hosts is his name.

The word of the LORD:
“The things that happened long ago I declared from of old;
I spoke them and made them known.
Then suddenly I acted,
and they came to pass.

Because I knew that you are stubborn,
and your neck is an iron sinew,
and your forehead bronze,

therefore I declared them to you long ago;
before they came to pass
I announced them to you,
lest you should say:
My idol did them,
and my carved image and my cast image commanded them.

You have heard all this, and now you must see it;
will you not acknowledge it yourselves?
From now on I announce to you new things,
hidden things that you have not known.

They are created now, and not long ago;
before today you had not heard them,
lest you should say:
Yes, I knew them already!

You had not heard them, nor known them;
your ear was not opened long ago.
For I knew that you would deal very treacherously,
and that you were called
‘a rebel from the womb.’

For the sake of my name I restrain my anger,
and for my praise I hold it back from you,
so that I do not cut you off.

See, I have refined you,
but not as silver;
I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
11
For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it;
for how should my name be profaned?
I will not give my glory to another!”
12
“Listen to me, O Jacob,
and Israel, whom I have called!
I am he;
I am the first,
and I am also the last!
13
My hand laid the foundation of the earth,
and my right hand spread out the heavens.
When I call to them,
they stand forth together.
14
Gather all of you and hear!
Who among them has declared these things?
He whom the LORD loves
shall carry out the LORD’s purpose against Babylon,
and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
15
I, even I, have spoken and called him;
I have brought him,
and he will make his way successful.”
16
Come near to Me, hear this:
From the beginning I have not spoken in secret;
and at the time it came to pass, I was there.”
And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and His Spirit.
17
Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer,
The Holy One, the God of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is for your good,
who leads you in the way you should go.
18
If only you had paid attention to My commandments,
then your peace would have been like a river that never runs dry,
and your joy would have kept overflowing
like the waves of the sea that never cease,
19
then your offspring would have been like the sand,
and your descendants like its countless grains;
their name would not be cut off
or blotted out from before Me.”
20
Go out from Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans!
Declare it with a shout of joy and make this known!
Proclaim it to the ends of the earth!
Say, “The LORD has redeemed Jacob, His servant!”
21
They did not thirst
when He led them through the desolate places;
He brought water out of the rock for them;
He split the rock, and water gushed out.
22
“There is no peace for the wicked!”
says the LORD.

Isaiah 48 is a message of rebuke and hope. God rebukes the nation of Israel for being stubborn, hypocritical, and honoring Him only with their lips, not from the heart. Yet, because of His own name and His steadfast love, God does not destroy them. Instead, He will purify them through suffering and bring them out of Babylon — a great act of grace. This is a call for His people to hear, believe, and obey.

“You call on My name, but not in truth and righteousness…”
- Israel professes to be God’s people, but does not live according to that confession
- They are stubborn and do not learn from their history
