The LORD said to me, “Take a large tablet and write on it with an ordinary writing tool: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”

So I called as witnesses for me two trustworthy men, the priest Uriah and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.

Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the LORD said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz,

for before the child knows how to cry, ‘My father!’ or ‘My mother!’ the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off before the king of Assyria.”

The LORD spoke to me again:

“Because this people has rejected
the gently flowing waters of Shiloah,
and has lost heart because of Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
7
therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them
the mighty and abundant waters of the River, the king of Assyria and all his glory;
and it will rise over all its channels
and overflow all its banks,
8
and it will sweep into Judah,
like a flood, rising up to the neck;
and its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, O Immanuel!”
9
Be broken, you peoples, and be shattered;
give ear, all you distant lands;
gird yourselves, and be shattered;
gird yourselves, and be shattered!

Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
make your plan, but it will not stand,
for God is with us!
11
For thus the LORD spoke to me with his hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people:
12
“Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread of it.
13
But the LORD of hosts, him you shall regard as holy; let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
14
And he will become a sanctuary,
but also a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense to both houses of Israel,
and a snare and a trap to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15
And many among them shall stumble;
they shall fall and be broken,
they shall be snared and taken.”
16
Bind up the testimony;
seal the teaching among my disciples.
17
I will wait for the LORD,
who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob;
I will hope in him.
18
Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
19
And when they say to you, “Seek guidance from the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” then answer, “Should not a people seek guidance from its God? Should they seek guidance from the dead on behalf of the living?”
20
“Seek instruction and testimony!”
Whoever does not speak according to this word,
for him there is no dawn.
21
They will pass through the land, hard-pressed and hungry;
and when they are hungry, they will become enraged and will curse their king and their God;
they will look upward to heaven,
22
and they will look to the earth,
and behold, only distress and darkness,
gloom that presses hard,
and they will be driven into thick darkness.

Isaiah 8 continues the earlier prophecy about political and spiritual crisis. Here, God makes clear that Assyria will come as an instrument of judgment, like a great flood that nearly overwhelms Judah. “Swift to the spoil, quick to the plunder”
- The Lord tells Isaiah to write this name — the meaning of the name: the hastening of ruin
- Isaiah’s son is made a sign that before he grows up, Judah’s enemies will be defeated

📌 2. Assyria Will Flood the Land (verses 5–10)
“It will come like the overflowing Jordan… even to the neck…”
- Because the people rejected the quiet waters from the Lord (His kingdom), they will receive the torrent of Assyria’s wrath
- Though Assyria invades, it will not utterly destroy Judah, because:
“God is with us” (Hebrew: Immanuel)

📌 3. Do Not Fear Like Them! (verses 11–15)
“Do not call conspiracy everything that this people calls conspiracy…”
- The Lord warned Isaiah not to join in the national fear
- Only the Lord is to be feared and sanctified
- For those who believe, the Lord is a place of refuge. For those who reject Him, the Lord becomes a stumbling stone
🎯 True faith remains calm when the world panics. The Lord is a stronghold for those who believe, but a stumbling block for those who refuse.
📌 4. Keep the Law and Trust the Word (verses 16–18)
“I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and warnings…”
- Isaiah is told to keep the Lord’s teaching as spiritual treasure in a dark age
- He and his children become symbols of warning and hope
