“I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a young woman?

For what is the portion from God above, and what inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3
Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and disaster for those who do evil?

Does not God see my ways and count all my steps?

If I have walked with falsehood, or my foot has hurried after deceit,
6
let me be weighed on accurate scales, and let God know my integrity.
7
If my step has turned aside from the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, and any stain has clung to my hands,
8
then let what I have sown be eaten by another, and let what grows for me be uprooted.
9
If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, or I have lain in wait at my neighbor’s door,
10
then let my wife grind grain for another, and let other men lie with her.

For that would be a shameful deed, yes, an iniquity to be judged by the judges.

Indeed, it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would burn up all my increase.
13
If I have disregarded the cause of my male servant or my female servant when they contended with me,
14
what then could I do when God rises up? When He calls me to account, what answer could I give Him?
15
Did not He who made me in the womb make them also? Did not One fashion us in the womb?
16
If I have withheld the desire of the poor, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
17
or eaten my morsel alone, while the fatherless did not share it
18
— no, from my youth I reared him as a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided her —;
19
if I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, or the needy without a covering,
20
and his loins have not blessed me, and he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21
if I have lifted my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate,
22
then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and my arm be broken from its socket.
23
For calamity from God was a terror to me, and because of His majesty I could not endure.
24
If I have made gold my trust, or said to fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’
25
if I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much;
26
if I looked at the sun when it shone, or the moon moving in splendor,
27
so that my heart was secretly enticed, and I sent a kiss to my hand toward her,
28
then that also would be a crime to be punished by the judges, for I would have denied the God who is above.
29
Have I rejoiced at the ruin of him who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook him
30
— I have not allowed my mouth to sin by demanding his life with a curse! —
31
If the men of my tent have said: Who has not been filled with his meat?
32
— indeed, the stranger has never had to spend the night outside; I have opened my door to the traveler! —
33
If I have covered my transgression like men, by hiding my guilt in my heart,
34
because I feared the crowd and the contempt of my family terrified me, so that I kept silent and did not go out of the door!
35
Oh, that I had one to hear me! — Here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! — If only there were an indictment written by my adversary!
36
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would wear it like a crown.
37
I would declare to Him every step of mine; as a prince I would approach Him.
38
If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together,
39
if I have eaten its yield without payment, and caused the owners to suffer,
40
then let thorns grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley.”
These are the words of Job.
🧭🛡️🔥 Summary of Job 31 – “I Live Blamelessly Before God”
Job 31 is the closing of Job’s long defense, and is one of the strongest statements of personal integrity in the Bible. In this chapter, Job challenges anyone — even God — to show his fault. He declares that his life is pure, just, and honest, even in his deepest thoughts and intentions.
Job sets out his defense in the form of conditional oaths:
➡️ “If I have done… then let…”
This is a form of public confession and moral courage from one who truly lives in the fear of God.
📌 1. Guarding Holiness and the Intent of the Heart (verses 1–12)
➡️ “I have made a covenant with my eyes, not to look at a woman with lust.”
➡️ Job affirms:
- He did not deceive or go astray
- He knew that God sees every step of a person
- He did not stray in marriage
- He was not tempted by other women
🎯 Purity of life begins in the heart and eyes. Job was not only free from adultery, but also guarded his thoughts.
📌 2. Just toward Servants and Others (verses 13–23)
➡️ Job did not:
- Ignore the rights of his servants
- Turn a blind eye to the poor, the fatherless, or the widow
- Keep bread only for himself
➡️ He lived in social concern and justice, because he knew that God sees and defends the oppressed.
🎯 Job’s integrity was not only personal, but also social and humane.
📌 3. Not Tempted by Wealth or Idols (verses 24–28)
➡️ Job did not:
- Put his hope in gold
- Worship the heavenly bodies (idols such as the sun and moon)
🎯 He rejected materialism and false worship.
📌 4. Not Harboring Hatred or Hypocrisy (verses 29–34)
➡️ He:
- Did not rejoice over an enemy’s misfortune
- Did not hide sin for fear of people
- Always kept his door open to anyone
🎯 Job lived honestly, openly, and free from resentment.
📌 5. Open Challenge: If I Have Done Wrong, Show It! (verses 35–40)
➡️ Job hoped:
“Ah, if only someone would hear me!”
➡️ He wanted God to answer, because he was confident in the sincerity of his life.
➡️ He swore that if he were guilty, then let his land yield no produce.
🎯 This is the final cry of a clear conscience, even though he did not understand why he suffered.
