Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

Gird up your loins like a man! I will question you, and you shall make it known to Me.
4
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding!

Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! — Or who stretched the line upon it?

On what were its bases set, and who laid its cornerstone

when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8
Who shut up the sea with doors, when it burst forth from the womb? —
9
when I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band;
10
when I prescribed its bounds, and set bars and doors;
11
when I said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther; here shall your proud waves be stayed!’

Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place,

that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?

It is changed like clay under a seal; all things stand out like a garment.
15
From the wicked their light is withheld, and the uplifted arm is broken.
16
Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17
Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18
Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Declare it, if you know it all.
19
Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness,
20
that you may take it to its territory, and that you may discern the paths to its house?

Surely you know it, for then you were already born, and the number of your days is great!

Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or seen the storehouses of the hail,
23
which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?

Where is the way to the place where light is divided, where the east wind is scattered over the earth?

Who has cut a channel for the flood, and a path for the thunderbolt,

to bring rain on a land where no one lives, on the wilderness where no human dwells;
27
to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the tender grass sprout?

Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?

From whose womb came the ice, and who gave birth to the frost of heaven?
30
The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion?

Can you bring forth the Mazzaroth in its season, or lead the Bear with its cubs?
33
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Or can you establish their rule over the earth?
34
Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters covers you?

Can you send forth lightning, that they may go and say to you, Here we are?

Who has put wisdom in the clouds, or who has given understanding to the mists?
37
Who can number the clouds by wisdom, and who can pour out the water jars of heaven,
38
when the dust hardens into a cast metal mass, and the clods of earth cling together?

(39-1) Can you hunt prey for the lioness, and satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

(39-2) when they crouch in their dens, lying in wait in the thicket?

(39-3) Who provides prey for the raven, when its young cry out to God, wandering about for lack of food?
🌩️🗣️🕊️ Summary of Job 38 – “The Lord Answers from within the Storm”
After the long speeches of Job and his friends, Job 38 marks the climactic moment — God Himself finally speaks.
But not with the answer Job expected. God does not directly explain the reason for suffering, but instead puts forward a series of searching questions about creation and the universe.
His purpose: to humble Job, to show human limitation, and to exalt the greatness of God.
📌 1. The Lord Answers from within the Storm (verses 1–3)
➡️ The Lord cries out:
“Who is this that darkens counsel with words without knowledge?”
➡️ Then He says to Job:
“Gird up your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you shall tell Me.”
🎯 God asserts His authority, and invites Job to reflect, not to argue.
📌 2. Questions about the Creation of the World (verses 4–11)
➡️ The Lord asks:
- Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
- Who measured it?
- Who shut in the sea with doors when it burst forth from the womb?
🎯 God shows: Job does not even know the foundations of creation, much less the purpose of all suffering.
📌 3. Questions about Nature and the Order of the World (verses 12–38)
➡️ The Lord puts forward a long series of questions:
- Have you ever commanded the dawn to appear?
- Do you know the way to the place of light?
- Can you govern the rain, hail, lightning, stars, and wind?
➡️ Including an astronomical question:
“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion?”
🎯 The universe works within a divine order beyond human control. This shows God’s total sovereignty.
📌 4. Question about the Animal World (verses 39–41)
➡️ God asks:
- Who gives food to the lion?
- Who provides food for the raven?
🎯 God cares for all His creation, even the wild animals that humans never notice.

✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
“How deep are the riches, wisdom, and knowledge of God! Truly His judgments are beyond searching out.”
➡️ Like Job — we can only stand in awe and bow.
“All things were created by Him and for Him… and all things hold together in Him.”
➡️ Christ is the center of creation. God’s questions lead to this confession.
Jesus rebuked the storm, and the disciples asked, “Who then is this?”
➡️ Just as with God in Job 38 — Jesus also rules over nature.
“What is man, that You remember him?”
➡️ Feeling small before creation is the first step toward wisdom.
