“For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,

I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; and there I will enter into judgment with them concerning My people and My inheritance, Israel, because they scattered them among the nations and divided up My land,

and cast lots for My people, giving a boy for a prostitute, and selling a girl for wine to drink.
4
Moreover, what are you to Me, O Tyre and Sidon and all the regions of Philistia? Are you repaying Me for something? If you are dealing with Me, swiftly and quickly I will return your deed upon your own head.

Because you have taken My silver and My gold, and have carried My precious treasures into your temples,

and have sold the people of Judah and the people of Jerusalem to the Greeks, in order to remove them far from their territory.
7
Behold, I will stir them up from the place to which you sold them, and I will return your deed upon your own head.
8
I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the people of Sheba, to a nation far away; for the LORD has spoken it.”

Proclaim this among the nations: prepare for war; rouse the mighty men; let all the warriors draw near and come up!
10
Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak say, “I am a warrior!”

Hasten and come, all you nations from every side, and gather there! Bring down Your mighty ones, O LORD!
12
Let the nations be stirred up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge all the nations from every side.
13
Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; come, tread, for the winepress is full; the vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.
14
Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! Yes, the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision!
15
The sun and the moon grow dark, and the stars withdraw their shining.
16
The LORD roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem He gives forth His voice; and the heavens and the earth shake. But the LORD is a refuge for His people, and a stronghold for the people of Israel.
17
“Then you will know that I, the LORD, am your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain. And Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall pass through it no more.
18
And it shall come to pass in that day that the mountains shall drip with new wine, the hills shall flow with milk, and all the streams of Judah shall flow with water; a spring shall go out from the house of the LORD and water the Valley of Shittim.
19
Egypt shall become a desolation, and Edom a barren wilderness, because of the violence done to the people of Judah, because they shed innocent blood in their land.
20
But Judah shall be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21
I will avenge their blood, blood I have not yet avenged; the LORD dwells in Zion.”

Joel 3 is the climax of the prophecy in the book of Joel: the Day of the LORD comes in the form of judgment on the nations that have oppressed God’s people. God will gather all the nations in the Valley of Jehoshaphat to be judged for what they have done to Israel. Yet, on the other hand, the people of the LORD are promised deliverance and restoration. A sharp contrast is shown: for the enemies, the Day of the LORD is destruction; for His people, it is a day of victory.

The LORD says:
“I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat…”
