Everyone has weaknesses. Some feel insecure because of their background, some feel inferior because of their education, and others feel unworthy to be used by God because of past sins. But the good news is, God does not call the perfect; rather, He perfects those He calls.
When Peter was called by Jesus to walk on water, he actually managed to take a few steps. But as soon as he shifted his gaze to the stormy wind, he began to sink (Matthew 14:28-30). That is a very clear picture that our focus determines our steps. As long as Peter looked at Jesus, he was able to walk on something impossible. But when he focused on his weakness and circumstances, he fell.
The same is true in our lives. When we are too busy thinking about our shortcomings, we easily become shaken and give up. But when our eyes are fixed on Christ, we find strength we do not have on our own. Paul wrote, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 Corinthians 1:27). In other words, God intentionally uses our weakness so that His power may be revealed.
Remember Moses, who had a speech impediment, yet was used to lead the nation of Israel. Or David, a young shepherd whom God used to defeat Goliath. They were not perfect, but they placed their trust in a perfect God. Our weakness is not a reason to stop, but an opportunity for Christ’s power to be displayed. Paul even boldly said, “For My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Keeping our focus on Christ means believing that the One who calls us is also the One who will equip us. When we feel like we are not enough, we are actually in the best position to rely fully on God. So do not let your weakness keep you from seeing His great grace.
Today, let us stop comparing ourselves with others. Do not keep fixating on what we do not have, but look to Jesus, who has given everything on the cross. When we look at Him, we will find strength to keep going, courage to obey, and peace that surpasses all understanding.
Lord Jesus, teach me to always look to You and not to my shortcomings. Thank You because You are able to use my life as it is for Your glory. Fill me with faith and courage to walk with You. Amen.
