Staying Kind Even When You’re Not Appreciated

There are times when we have already tried to do good, offered a smile, even helped others, but the response is cold, indifferent, or even harsh. Situations like this can make our hearts disappointed and want to stop doing good. Yet God’s Word reminds us that kindness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, not merely a response to other people’s attitudes.

Jesus Himself is the best example. When He was crucified, people mocked Him, spat on Him, and even crucified Him. But what did He say? “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). Wasn’t that an extraordinary expression of kindness and love, even when He was not appreciated at all?

True kindness does not come from our mood or from how others treat us, but from a heart already filled with the love of Christ. Paul writes in Romans 12:17-18, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” In other words, being kind is not about them, but about our obedience to God.

It is indeed hard to keep smiling when we are looked down on. Yet kindness has an unseen power. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” When we choose to remain kind, we can break the chain of hatred and replace it with peace.

Kindness is also a testimony of our faith. The world is used to revenge, but those filled with the Holy Spirit go against the current. When we are kind even when we are not appreciated, others can see Christ through our lives. This is a simple yet powerful way to share the gospel without words.

Let us remember, kindness does not mean weakness, but rather shows spiritual maturity. Like a tree that keeps bearing fruit even when stones are thrown at it, so believers are called to keep doing good even when they do not always receive appreciation. Galatians 6:9 strengthens us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

So when our kindness is not appreciated, do not lose heart. Keep sowing goodness, because the Lord who sees our hearts will reward us in His time.

Lord Jesus, teach me to remain kind and to do good even when I am not always appreciated. Help me not to become bitter or disappointed, but to keep a gentle and loving heart. May others see Your love through the kindness of my life. Amen.
