One of the greatest examples of humility in the Bible comes from John the Baptist. He was known as a bold prophet, a voice crying out in the wilderness, and the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Yet even though he had many followers and was well known, John never saw himself as the center of attention. He knew who he was and who must be exalted.
When his disciples worried that people were beginning to follow Jesus instead, John did not feel threatened. Instead, he answered with remarkable words: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). This statement is clear evidence of pure humility. John understood that the purpose of his ministry was to point people to Christ, not to draw attention to himself.
John’s humility was also seen when people asked whether he was the Messiah. He firmly said, “I am not the Messiah, but I am sent ahead of Him” (John 3:28). John did not take glory that was not his. He did not seek human recognition, but remained faithful in carrying out the task God had given him.
In our lives, the temptation to feel more important than others often appears. We want to be seen, appreciated, and even praised. Yet, true humility means recognizing that everything we have is only God’s grace. Talents, ministry, and even opportunities to serve all come from Him. As it is written: “For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” (1 Corinthians 4:7).
John did not only teach humility with words, but with the way he lived. He was willing to step aside so that Jesus would be exalted. That is a valuable lesson for us. Our lives should be a mirror that reflects Christ, not ourselves. The more people know us, the more they should be directed to know Jesus more deeply.
Let us learn from John the Baptist: humility does not mean thinking less of yourself, but placing yourself according to God’s will. To be humble means to realize that all glory belongs only to the Lord.
Lord, teach me to have a humble heart like John the Baptist. Do not let me seek glory for myself, but make my life an instrument to exalt Your name. May every step I take always lead people to Christ. Amen.
