Life Passion: Between Hormones and the Call of the Spirit

Introduction

What makes someone wake up in the morning with enthusiasm while another person feels tired before the day even begins? Many people think the passion for life is only about mood or the weather of the heart, when in fact there are biological factors involved: hormones. But is the passion for life only a matter of body chemistry, or is there a deeper spiritual calling?

The Science Behind Passion for Life

Our bodies produce various hormones that affect energy and motivation. Dopamine gives a sense of pleasure when we achieve something, serotonin helps maintain mood stability, and adrenaline gives an extra boost when we face challenges.
When these hormones are balanced, we feel more alive and passionate. However, if they are disrupted—for example, because of chronic stress, lack of sleep, or poor eating habits—we can lose our enthusiasm without any clear reason.

Research in the field of neuropsychology shows that the brain responds to life purpose in a way similar to a great reward. When someone knows why he or she lives, the dopamine system in the brain works more consistently, not just in brief bursts.

A Biblical Perspective on Passion for Life

The Bible does not mention the words “dopamine” or “serotonin,” but it speaks often about deep joy and zeal in serving. Romans 12:11 says, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”
This means that true passion for life is not only a chemical reaction, but a spiritual response to God’s calling.

Jesus said in John 4:34, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” Here, Jesus’ passion for life came from the mission given by the Father, not merely from physical or emotional circumstances.

When Hormones and the Spiritual Call Meet

Interestingly, science and faith do not conflict here. Hormones are tools God created to support us in carrying out life’s mission. When we live in the right purpose, our body and soul often work in harmony, making us feel strong and enthusiastic.
On the other hand, if our purpose is unclear, even positive hormones can lose their effect, because our hearts feel empty.

How to Maintain Passion for Life

  1. Care for your body—get enough sleep, eat nutritious food, and exercise to keep your hormones balanced.
  2. Discover and live out your calling—reflect on what God has entrusted to your life.
  3. Fill your heart with the WordPsalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
  4. Nurture a spiritual community that can strengthen one another.

Conclusion

Passion for life is not only a matter of biology or psychology, but also of the spirit. Hormones provide the drive, but God’s calling provides the direction. When the two go hand in hand, we do not merely live with energy, but also with the right purpose.
