Touched and Touching: God Is Present Through Touch

Introduction

Have you ever felt calmer just because someone rubbed your shoulder or gave you a warm hug? A simple touch can ease the heart, reduce anxiety, and even strengthen faith. Interestingly, both science and the Bible acknowledge that touch is a universal language of love.

The Science Behind Touch

From a scientific perspective, when we are touched gently, the body releases oxytocin, a hormone known as the hormone of bonding. This hormone helps lower blood pressure, slow the heartbeat, and give a sense of safety.
Research in neuroscience has also found that touch stimulates C-tactile nerves in the skin that are directly connected to the emotional centers of the brain. This is why touch is not only physical, but also affects our inner state.

Interestingly, babies who are often touched or held grow with a better sense of confidence, while a lack of touch can affect a person’s emotional development. In other words, our bodies were indeed created to experience and give loving touch.

Touch in the Biblical Perspective

The Bible is full of stories of touch that bring healing. When Jesus healed the lepers, He touched them (Mark 1:41), even though socially it was considered taboo. In Luke 8:44-48, the woman with the issue of blood was healed simply by touching the hem of Jesus’ garment.
Touch in the biblical context is not merely physical interaction, but a channel of God’s love, power, and acceptance.

Psalm 139:5 says, “You hem me in behind and before, and You lay Your hand upon me.” This is a picture of how real and personal God’s touch is in our lives, even when we do not realize it.

How to Bring God’s Presence Through Touch

  1. A sincere hug for someone who is grieving.
  2. A pat on the shoulder as support for someone who is struggling.
  3. Holding the hand of someone who feels alone.
  4. Serving with loving touch in prayer together.

In each of these moments, our touch can become a channel of God’s warmth and love for others.

Conclusion

Science teaches that touch calms the body; the Bible teaches that touch can restore the soul. God often uses touch to convey His love, whether through our hands or through the hands of others He sends.
So do not underestimate a hug, a handshake, or a small pat, because it can be the way God works in a real way.
