In the Christmas story, Mary is an extraordinary figure. She was just a young girl from Nazareth, without power or an important position, but chosen by God to be the mother of the Savior. What makes Mary so special is her obedient faith, even when she did not fully understand God’s plan.
When the angel Gabriel came bringing the news that she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit, it was natural for Mary to be surprised and afraid. Luke 1:34 records Mary’s question, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” But after hearing the angel’s explanation, Mary gave an extraordinary answer of faith: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). This response shows humility and full trust in God’s plan, without much protest or demand.
Mary’s faith is a faith that believes before seeing. She did not wait for everything to become clear or easy to understand. Mary chose to believe that if God planned it, then God would also enable it. Such obedience often challenges us. In daily life, we tend to want to understand all the details of God’s plan before stepping forward, whereas true faith means daring to step even without knowing the outcome.
What can we learn from Mary?
- Obedience without needing to understand everything. Not all of God’s ways can we comprehend, but we can choose to believe that His plans are always good (Isaiah 55:8-9).
- Having a servant’s heart. Mary called herself “the Lord’s servant,” meaning she was willing to be used, not seeking her own will.
- Treasuring the word in her heart. Luke 2:19 records that Mary “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” She was not busy seeking recognition, but focused on what God was doing.
When we face situations we do not understand, we can learn from Mary’s example. God often calls us to believe without many questions, because His plans are far greater than human logic. Believing does not mean we understand everything, but we are confident that God faithfully leads our steps.
Let us ask ourselves: Am I brave enough to say like Mary, “Let it be to me according to Your word?” Such obedient faith is the key to seeing God’s miracles work in our lives.
