The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, concerning what he saw about Samaria and Jerusalem.

Hear, all you peoples!
Give heed, O earth, and all that is in it!
Let the Lord GOD be a witness against you,
the Lord from his holy temple.

For behold, the LORD is coming out from his place
and will tread upon the high places of the earth.
4
The mountains will melt under his feet,
and the valleys will split apart,
like wax before the fire,
like waters poured down a steep place.

All this is because of the transgression of Jacob,
and because of the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the transgression of Jacob?
Is it not Samaria?
And what is the sin of the house of Judah?
Is it not Jerusalem?

Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of ruins in the field,
a place for planting vineyards.
I will pour down her stones into the valley,
and I will lay bare her foundations.

All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces,
and all her wages shall be burned with fire,
and all her idols I will destroy;
for from the wages of a harlot they were gathered,
and to the wages of a harlot they shall return.

For this I will lament and wail;
I will go stripped and barefoot;
I will howl like the jackals
and mourn like the ostriches:

for her wound is incurable;
it has come to Judah;
it has reached the gate of my people,
to Jerusalem!

Tell it not in Gath;
weep not at all!
Roll yourself in the dust at Beth-le-Aphrah!

Pass on, O inhabitants of Shaphir,
in nakedness and shame.
The inhabitants of Zaanan
do not come forth.
The lamentation of Beth-ezel
shall take away from you its standing.

For the inhabitants of Maroth
wait anxiously for good,
because disaster has come down from the LORD
to the gate of Jerusalem.

Harness the swift steeds to the chariot,
O inhabitants of Lachish!
It was the beginning of sin
to the daughter of Zion,
for in you were found
the transgressions of Israel.
14
Therefore you shall give parting gifts
to Moresheth-gath.
The houses of Achzib
shall be a deceit to the kings of Israel.
15
I will again bring a conqueror to you,
O inhabitants of Mareshah;
the glory of Israel
shall come to Adullam.
16
Make yourself bald and cut off your hair,
because of your cherished children;
make yourself as bald as the eagle,
for they shall go from you into exile.
🌍🔥🏛️ Summary of Micah 1 – The Lord Comes Down to Judge the Sin of Israel and Judah
The opening chapter of Micah begins at once with a serious tone: the Lord comes from heaven to judge his people because of their sins. Micah warns that Samaria and Jerusalem, the two capitals of the northern and southern kingdoms, will be punished because of idolatry and injustice. This is a call for all God’s people to be watchful and repent, because the Lord will not allow sin to continue.
📌 1. The LORD Comes Down from His Place (verses 1–4)
“For behold, the LORD is coming out from his place…”
- Micah delivers the word of the Lord in a startling and shocking way
- The Lord comes down directly to the earth — the mountains melt, the earth splits apart
- This is a picture of God’s power that cannot be ignored
🎯 The Lord is not silent toward sin — He comes down Himself to act.
📌 2. Samaria Will Fall (verses 5–7)
“Because of Jacob’s transgression and because of the sins of the house of Israel…”
- Samaria (the northern kingdom) is the first focus of the Lord’s anger
- The city will be reduced to ruins, and its idols destroyed
- Wealth gained through spiritual unfaithfulness will be burned and shamed
🎯 No city or system can stand in defiance of the Lord — even those that seem strong and rich.
📌 3. The Prophet Micah’s Lament (verses 8–9)
“For its wound is very grievous… even to the gate of Jerusalem.”
- Micah laments deeply — walking naked and weeping
- The sin and ruin of Samaria will also spread to Judah
- Jerusalem is not immune — because sin never stays in one place
🎯 A true prophet does not only denounce sin, but also is broken by the people’s sin.

“Do not tell it in Gath…”
- Micah uses wordplay to mock and warn the cities in the southern region
- Each city name has a prophetic meaning — describing the judgment to come
- All the cities are said to face destruction, lamentation, or suffering
🎯 The Lord sees and knows every city, and nothing escapes His warning.

- The Lord will not remain silent in the face of sin, even among His chosen people
- Idolatry and injustice will bring ruin, sooner or later
- The ruin of one region often becomes a warning to another — sin spreads if it is left unchecked
- A true leader or servant of God must be sensitive, lament, and dare to speak out
- The Lord who comes down in wrath is also the Lord who invites repentance
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
“What a person sows, that will he also reap.”
→ The judgment on Samaria and Judah is the result of piled-up sin.
“Judgment must begin with the house of God itself.”
→ Just as with Jerusalem, the church and God’s people today are not immune to divine correction.
“Jesus wept over Jerusalem…”
→ Just as Micah, Jesus also wept over the destruction that came because the people rejected God.
“The Lord disciplines the one He loves…”
→ God’s wrath is not without love, but to bring His people back to Him.
