In many churches, we see beautiful decorations, neat stage arrangements, and worship equipment that looks luxurious. This often raises the question: does worship really have to be adorned with luxury to be acceptable before God? Does God prefer grand worship, or does He look more at the heart of His worshipers?
The Bible teaches that true worship centers on the heart, not on outward appearances. Jesus once rebuked the Pharisees who were too busy with external rituals but forgot the condition of the heart. “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Mark 7:6). This verse reminds us that luxury means nothing if our hearts are not sincere in worshiping God.
Does God Reject Splendor?
It should be remembered that God does not forbid splendor or beauty in worship. Even in the Old Testament, God gave detailed instructions about the tabernacle and the Temple built with the finest materials (Exodus 25:1-9). That beauty was not for show, but to reflect the holiness and glory of God. So, luxury is not a problem as long as the motivation is to honor God, not for human pride.
Worship Is Not About the Building
Jesus emphasized that true worship is about spirit and truth, not merely place or facilities. “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him” (John 4:23). This means that even in a simple place we can worship wholeheartedly, and God is still pleased.
Sometimes we focus too much on the building or worship equipment and forget the essence of worship, which is a personal relationship with God. Luxury will not add power to prayer, but a sincere heart will make our worship pleasing before Him.
The Danger of Misguided Luxury
If luxury is used only for showing off, it can become a stumbling block. James 2:1-4 rebukes favoritism toward the rich in the congregation. This reminds us that worship is not a place to display social status. God looks at the heart, not how magnificent our outward appearance is.
What God Seeks
The most important thing is the right attitude of the heart. Obedience, humility, and love for others are more valuable than all luxury. Hosea 6:6 says, “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” God prefers worship that comes from a heart that loves Him rather than physical grandeur.
