Many people get chills when they hear the word “doomsday”. The image of a great disaster, the earth being destroyed, and the world ending often causes fear. But how should believers view doomsday according to the Bible? Should we live in fear, or rather with hope?
From the Bible’s perspective, doomsday is not just a terrifying event, but also a moment of the fulfillment of God’s promise. Jesus promised to come again and restore everything. In John 14:3, He said, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” This verse shows that His coming is good news for those who believe.
Why Are Many People Afraid?
Fear of doomsday often arises from ignorance. Many people only know about doomsday from scary movies or conspiracy theories. In fact, the Bible explains that the day is not meant to frighten believers, but to fulfill God’s plan. 1 Thessalonians 5:9 says, “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
If we live far from God, certainly that day feels frightening, because there is judgment for the world that rejects His love. But for those who live in Christ, that day is a time of joy because we will meet the Savior.
Prepare with Faith, Not Panic
Jesus Himself reminds us to always be watchful. In Matthew 24:42 He said, “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” However, being watchful does not mean living in fear, but living with steadfast faith. Obedience, prayer, and love are the ways we prepare ourselves.
We do not need to get trapped in panic because of speculation about when doomsday will come. Jesus emphasized that no one knows the day or hour, except the Father (Matthew 24:36). What God desires is that we remain faithful in living our daily lives with love, loving others, and keeping faith until the end.
Hope in the Coming of Christ
For believers, the day of judgment is actually a moment of victory, not fear. Revelation 21:4 describes the state after Christ’s coming: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” This verse gives us a beautiful picture that the end of this world is not merely destruction, but the beginning of eternal life full of peace.
So, Should We Be Afraid?
The answer is no, if we live in Christ. Fear only arises if we do not have a personal relationship with God. But if our hearts are attached to Him, we can look forward to His coming with hope, not fear.
The key is to live by faith, maintain holiness, and always be watchful. Not to avoid the judgment day, but to welcome the promise of salvation that God has already given.
