Shecaniah, Rehum, Meremoth,

Iddo, Ginnethoi, Abijah,

Mijamin, Maadiah, Bilgah,

Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah,

Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, and Jedaiah. These were the heads of the priests and their brothers in the days of Jeshua.

And of the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah. This Mattaniah and his brothers were in charge of the songs of thanksgiving,

while Bakbukiah and Unni and their brothers stood opposite them according to their divisions of duty.

Jeshua became the father of Joiakim, and Joiakim became the father of Eliashib, and Eliashib became the father of Joiada,

and Joiada became the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan became the father of Jaddua.

In the days of Joiakim, these were the priests, heads of fathers’ houses: of Seraiah’s house, Meraiah; of Jeremiah’s house, Hananiah;

of Ezra’s house, Meshullam; of Amariah’s house, Johanan;

of Malluch’s house, Jonathan; of Shebaniah’s house, Joseph;

of Harim’s house, Adna; of Meraioth’s house, Helkai;

of Iddo’s house, Zechariah; of Ginnethon’s house, Meshullam;

of Abijah’s house, Zichri; of Miniamin’s house, Piltai; of Moadiah’s house,

Shammua; of Bilgah’s house, Jonathan; of Shemaiah’s house,

of Hilkiah’s house, Hashabiah; and of Jedaiah’s house, Nethanel.

As for the Levites, the heads of fathers’ houses were recorded in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua, while the priests were recorded until the reign of Darius the Persian.

The heads of the fathers’ houses of the sons of Levi were recorded in the book of the chronicles until the days of Johanan son of Eliashib.

These were the heads of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their brothers who stood opposite them to sing praises and thanksgiving according to the commandment of David, the man of God, division by division.

Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers, keeping watch at the storehouses by the gates.

These lived in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and in the days of the governor Nehemiah and of Ezra the priest, the scribe.

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were summoned from all their places and brought to Jerusalem to celebrate the dedication with gladness, with thanksgiving and singing, with cymbals, harps, and lyres.

Then the singers gathered together from the region around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Netophathites,
29
from Beth-gilgal, and from the fields of Geba and Azmaveth; for the singers had built villages around Jerusalem.
30
And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and then purified the people, the gates, and the wall.
31
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up onto the wall, and I appointed two great choirs. One went to the right on the wall toward the Dung Gate.

After them went Hoshaiah with some of the leaders of Judah,

also Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam,
34
Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, and Jeremiah,
35
and some of the priests’ sons with trumpets: Zechariah son of Jonathan son of Shemaiah son of Mattaniah son of Micaiah son of Zaccur son of Asaph,
36
and his brothers, namely: Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God; and Ezra the scribe went before them.

At the Fountain Gate they went straight up by the steps of the City of David, by the ascent of the wall, past the house of David, and to the Water Gate on the east.
38
The second choir went to the left, and I followed it with some of the people along the wall, past the Tower of the Furnaces to the Broad Wall.

Then we passed by the Gate of Ephraim, the Old Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. They stopped at the Gate of the Guard.

Then the two choirs stood in the house of God. So did I, together with some of the officials,
41
and the priests: Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, Hananiah, with trumpets,
42
and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzi, Johanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer. Then the singers sang loudly under the direction of Jezrahiah.
43
On that day they offered great sacrifices. They rejoiced, for God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.
44
At that time men were appointed over the storerooms for the contributions, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them the portions required by law for the priests and the Levites from the fields of each city. For Judah rejoiced over the priests and the Levites who were serving.
45
For they performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the command of David and of Solomon his son.
46
For from ancient times, in the days of David and Asaph, there were leaders of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.
47
In the days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, all Israel gave contributions for the singers and the gatekeepers, as each day required, and they set apart holy offerings for the Levites. And the Levites set apart holy offerings for the children of Aaron.
