At that time portions from the book of Moses were read in the hearing of the people. It was found written in that book that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not enter the assembly of God forever,

because they did not meet the Israelites with bread and water, but hired Balaam against the Israelites to curse them. Yet our God turned the curse into a blessing.

When they heard the reading of the Law, they separated all those of foreign descent from Israel.
4
But before this, the priest Eliashib, who had been appointed over the chambers of the house of our God and who was closely related to Tobiah,

had prepared a large room for Tobiah. Previously they had put in it the grain offering, the incense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, new wine, and oil that belonged to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests.

When this happened, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of the reign of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I had gone to the king. But after some time I asked leave of the king to go.

Then I came to Jerusalem and saw the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah’s benefit, in that he had prepared a room for Tobiah in the court of the house of God.

I was very displeased, and I threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.

Then I ordered the room to be cleansed, and after that I brought back into it the vessels of the house of God, the grain offering, and the incense.

I also found that the portions for the Levites had not been given, so that the Levites and the singers who were doing the work had each gone back to his field.

I rebuked the officials and said, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I gathered the Levites together and restored them to their place.

Then all Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and oil into the storehouses.
13
As overseers of the storehouses I appointed the priest Shelemiah, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah the Levite, and Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, was with them, because these men were considered faithful. They were entrusted with distributing to their brothers.

Remember me for this, O my God, and do not wipe out the good deeds I have done for the house of my God and for its services!

In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. I warned them when they were selling food.

Also the men of Tyre who lived there brought fish and all kinds of goods and sold them to the people of Judah on the Sabbath, even in Jerusalem.
17
Then I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you are doing, profaning the holiness of the Sabbath?
18
Did not your fathers do this, so that our God brought all this disaster upon us and upon this city? Do you intend to increase the wrath that has come upon Israel by profaning the holiness of the Sabbath?”
19
When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the gates shut and commanded that they not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my men at the gates so that no load would enter on the Sabbath.
20
But the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night once or twice outside the wall of Jerusalem.
21
Then I warned them, saying, “Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do this again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.
22
I also commanded the Levites to purify themselves and come guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath.
O my God, remember me also for this, and show me mercy according to your great steadfast love!

In those days I also saw that some Jews had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, or Moab.
24
Some of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of that people, and did not know how to speak the language of Judah.
25
I rebuked them, cursed them, struck some of them, and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, “You shall never give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves!
26
Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin because of such things? Among many nations there was no king like him, who was loved by his God and made by God king over all Israel; yet even he was led into sin by those foreign women.
27
Must we hear that you too are doing all this great evil, acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”
28
One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I drove him away from me.
29
O my God, remember how they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priests and the Levites.
30
Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I assigned duties for the priests and the Levites, each in his own work,
31
and I arranged for the supply of wood at appointed times and for the firstfruits.
O my God, remember me for good!
