The LORD said to Aaron: “You and your sons, together with your whole clan, must bear the guilt for every offense against the sanctuary; but only you and your sons are to bear the guilt for every offense committed in the exercise of your priestly office.
2
Also bring near your brothers, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your fathers, with you, so that they may join themselves to you and serve you, when you and your sons are before the tent of the testimony.
3
They shall perform their duty to you and their duty concerning the whole tent; only they must not come near the furnishings of the sanctuary or the altar, lest they die, both they and you.
4
They shall join themselves to you and perform their duty concerning the Tent of Meeting in all the work of the tent; but no layman shall come near you.
5
And you shall perform your duty concerning the sanctuary and your duty concerning the altar, so that wrath may no longer come upon the Israelites.
6
Behold, I myself have taken your brothers, the Levites, from among the Israelites as a gift to you, as those given to the LORD, to do the work of the Tent of Meeting;
7
but you and your sons shall keep your priestly office in everything that concerns the altar and everything within the veil, and you shall serve in it; as a service of gift I give you your priestly office; but the layman who comes near shall be put to death.”
8
Then the LORD said to Aaron: “Behold, I have given you charge of the special offerings made to Me; all the holy offerings of the Israelites I give to you and to your sons as your portion; this is a perpetual statute.
9
This shall be your portion from all the most holy offerings, namely from the part that is not to be burned: all their offerings, whether grain offering, sin offering, or guilt offering, which they present to Me; that is the most holy portion that belongs to you and to your sons.
10
As a most holy portion you shall eat it; every male may eat it; it shall be holy to you.
11
This also is your portion: the special offering from their gifts, including all the wave offerings of the Israelites; I give all these to you and to your sons and daughters with you; this is a perpetual statute. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it.
12
All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine and of the grain, the firstfruits of which they give to the LORD, I give to you.
13
The firstfruits of all that grows in their land, which they bring to the LORD, shall also be yours; everyone who is clean in your house may eat it.
14
Everything devoted to the LORD among the Israelites shall be yours.
15
Everything that first opens the womb of all living things, which they present to the LORD, whether of man or of beast, shall be yours; only you shall redeem the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem.
16
As for their redemption price, from one month old you shall redeem them according to their valuation, five shekels of silver, by the shekel of the sanctuary; this shekel is twenty gerahs.
17
But the firstborn of an ox, a sheep, or a goat you shall not redeem; they are holy. You shall pour out their blood on the altar, and burn their fat as an offering made by fire, for a pleasing aroma to the LORD;
18
but their flesh shall be yours, like the breast of the wave offering and like the right thigh.
19
All the special offerings, the holy offerings that the Israelites present to the LORD, I give to you and to your sons and daughters with you; it is a perpetual statute; it is a covenant of salt forever before the LORD for you and for your offspring.”
20
The LORD said to Aaron: “You shall have no inheritance in their land, and you shall have no portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites.
21
To the Levites, behold, I have given all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance, in return for the work they do, the work of the Tent of Meeting.
22
So the Israelites shall no longer come near the Tent of Meeting, lest they bear sin and die;
23
but the Levites shall do the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they shall bear the consequences of their iniquity; it shall be a perpetual statute for you throughout your generations. They shall have no inheritance among the Israelites,
24
for the tithe of the Israelites, which they present to the LORD as a special offering, I have given to the Levites as their inheritance; therefore I have said concerning them: They shall have no inheritance among the Israelites.”
25
The LORD said to Moses:

“Moreover, you shall speak to the Levites and say to them: When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I give you from them as your inheritance, then you shall present from it a special offering to the LORD, namely your tithe from the tithe,
27
and your offering shall be reckoned to you as a special offering, like the grain from the threshing floor and like the produce from the winepress.
28
Thus you also shall present as a special offering to the LORD a portion of all the tithes that you receive from the Israelites. And from it you shall give the special offering to the LORD to Aaron the priest.
29
From all that is given to you, from all its best part, you shall present the whole special offering to the LORD, as its holy portion.
30
Moreover, you shall say to them: When you set apart the best of it, then for the Levites it shall be counted as the produce of the threshing floor and as the produce of the winepress;
31
you may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it is your wages in return for your work at the Tent of Meeting.
32
And in this you shall not bring guilt upon yourselves, provided that you set apart the best of it; thus you shall not profane the holy offerings of the Israelites, and you shall not die.”
🛐🎁⚖️ Summary of Numbers 18 – The Duties of the Priests, the Levites, and the Tithes
Numbers 18 is a reaffirmation of the special roles and responsibilities of Aaron, the priests, and the Levites. After Korah’s rebellion, the LORD makes clear that only those divinely called may handle holy things. This chapter also explains the system of financial support and tithes for spiritual service.
📌 1. Aaron’s and His Family’s Responsibilities (verses 1–7)
- Aaron and his sons were responsible for the sanctuary and the altar.
- If there was a violation by outsiders, those who sinned would die.
- The Levites became helpers to the priests, but they were not to touch the furnishings or enter the sanctuary so that they would not die.
🎯 Service in ministry cannot be taken lightly—there are holy responsibilities and clear boundaries.
📌 2. The Priests’ Rights to the Holy Offerings (verses 8–19)
- The Lord gave the priests a portion from the offerings of the people of Israel as their portion (spiritual inheritance):
A share of the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering.
The firstborn offerings of people and animals (the firstborn animals were slain, the firstborn sons were redeemed).
The first yield of oil, wine, grain, and the produce of the land.

📌 3. The Tribe of Levi Did Not Receive an Inheritance of Land (verses 20–24)
- The Lord said to Aaron:
“You shall have no inheritance in their land… I am your portion and your inheritance.”
- The tribe of Levi had no land inheritance in Israel. Instead, they lived from the tithes given by the people of Israel.

📌 4. The Tithe for the Levites & the Second Tithe for the Priests (verses 25–32)
- The Levites who received the tithe were also to offer 10% of that tithe to the Lord, which was given to the priests.

- The work of spiritual ministry is a holy calling, not an ordinary job.
- The priests and the Levites have great responsibilities as well as fitting blessings.

- The servants of God are also called to give from the blessings they receive.
- In holiness, there are limits to roles and responsibilities that must be respected.
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
- Jesus is our High Priest, and like Aaron, He stands as a faithful mediator (Hebrews 4:14–16).
- In the church today, full-time ministers are also worthy of support from the people, as in the principle of 1 Corinthians 9:13–14:
“The Lord has appointed that those who proclaim the Gospel should live from that proclamation.”
- Yet ministry is not about profit, but about a holy calling full of responsibility.
- We all are “a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9) — called to serve with sincere hearts, and to give with joy.
