Numbers 19 – Purification Water

1
The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:

2
“This is the statute of the law that the LORD has commanded, saying: Speak to the Israelites, that they bring you a red heifer without blemish, in which there is no defect and on which a yoke has never come.

3
You shall give it to Eleazar the priest, and the heifer shall be brought outside the camp and slaughtered before the priest.

4
Then Eleazar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and sprinkle some of it toward the front of the Tent of Meeting seven times.

5
The heifer shall then be burned in his sight; its hide, its flesh, and its blood, with its dung, shall be burned.

6
The priest shall take cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet yarn, and throw them into the midst of the fire that is burning the heifer.

7
Then the priest shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp; but the priest shall be unclean until the evening.

8
He who burns the heifer shall wash his clothes in water and bathe his body in water, and he shall be unclean until the evening.

9
Then a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and place them in a clean place outside the camp, and they shall be kept for the congregation of the Israelites for the water of purification; it is for sin removal.

10
The one who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and he shall be unclean until the evening. This shall be a lasting statute for the Israelites and for the stranger who lives among you.

11
Whoever touches the dead body of any person shall be unclean seven days.

12
He shall purify himself with the water on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean. But if he does not purify himself on the third day, then he shall not be clean on the seventh day.

13
Whoever touches the dead body of any person who has died, and does not purify himself, defiles the LORD’s sanctuary; and that person shall be cut off from Israel, because the water of purification has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean, and his uncleanness remains on him.

14
This is the law when a person dies in a tent: everyone who enters the tent and everything that is in the tent shall be unclean seven days;

15
and every open vessel with no covering tied on it is unclean.

16
Also, whoever in the open field touches one who has been slain by the sword, or a dead body, or the bones of a human being, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

17
For the unclean person, some of the ashes of the sin offering that was burned up shall be taken, and running water shall be put into the vessel with those ashes.

18
Then a clean person shall take hyssop, dip it in the water, and sprinkle it on the tent and on all the vessels and on the persons who were there, and on the one who touched the bones, or the slain, or the dead body, or the grave;

19
the clean person shall sprinkle the unclean person on the third day and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall make atonement for him; and the unclean person shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and at evening he shall be clean.

20
But the man who is unclean and does not purify himself, that person shall be cut off from among the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD; the water of purification has not been sprinkled on him, so he remains unclean.

21
This shall be a lasting statute for them. The one who sprinkles the water of purification shall wash his clothes, and whoever touches the water of purification shall be unclean until evening.

22
Whatever the unclean person touches shall be unclean, and the person who touches him shall also be unclean until evening.”

🐄💧🔥 Summary of Numbers 19 – The Law of the Red Heifer and the Water of Purification

Numbers 19 discusses the regulations for cleansing from ritual uncleanness, especially uncleanness from touching a dead body. The Lord commanded that ashes of the red heifer (set apart in a special way) be mixed with water to make water of purification, a symbol of sanctification and separation from death.

📌 1. The Red Heifer Without Blemish (verses 1–10)

  • The Lord commanded that they bring a perfect red heifer, without blemish, and never used for work.
  • The heifer was given to the priest Eleazar, taken outside the camp, and then slaughtered and burned completely:
    • Its flesh, blood, hide, and entrails were burned.

    • Cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet cloth were thrown into the fire of the burning.

📖 The ashes from this burning were collected and kept for making the water of purification.

📌 2. The Water of Purification and Rules for Its Use (verses 11–22)

  • Anyone who touches a human corpse becomes unclean for seven days.
  • To be cleansed:
    • On the 3rd and 7th day, the water of purification is sprinkled on him using hyssop.

    • If he is not cleansed, he will be cut off from the people because he has defiled the LORD’s Tabernacle.

🎯 Uncleanness is not only a physical matter, but also a spiritual one — one must not approach the holy place while unclean.

📖 Main Lessons

  1. The LORD strongly emphasizes holiness and separation from uncleanness, especially that which is related to death.
  2. The red heifer is a symbol of a sacrifice that removes uncleanness—specific, perfect, and used once.
  3. The water of purification symbolizes cleansing that comes from sacrifice and sanctification by God.
  4. Ritual uncleanness is a picture of sin that makes a person unworthy to come before God.
  5. Whoever neglects purification cannot be part of the people of the LORD.

Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)

  • The red heifer is a prophetic picture of Jesus Christ:
    • Without blemish (Hebrews 9:14)

    • Crucified outside the city just as the red heifer was burned outside the camp (Hebrews 13:11–12)

    • His blood cleanses the conscience from dead works so that we may serve the living God.

“How much more will the blood of Christ… cleanse our conscience…” (Hebrews 9:13–14)

  • The water of purification = a symbol of the blood of Christ and the cleansing word (Ephesians 5:26).
