1
Then the Israelites, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there.

Now there was no water for the congregation, and they gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron.

The people quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD!
4
Why have you brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here?
5
Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain, or figs, or vines, or pomegranates; and there is no water to drink.”
6
Then Moses and Aaron went away from the congregation to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

The LORD spoke to Moses:

“Take the staff, and you and Aaron your brother gather the congregation together; and speak before their eyes to the rock, and it will yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their livestock.”
9
So Moses took the staff from before the LORD, as He had commanded him.
10
When Moses and Aaron had gathered the assembly before the rock, he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels; must we bring water for you out of this rock?”
11
Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and much water came out, so that the congregation and their livestock drank.
12
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in Me and did not uphold My holiness before the eyes of the Israelites, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land that I have given them.”

These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and He showed His holiness among them.
14
Then Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom with this message: “Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that has come upon us,
15
how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians dealt harshly with us and our fathers;
16
how we cried out to the LORD, and He heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Now we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your border.
17
Please let us pass through your land; we will not go through field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from any well. We will go along the king’s highway, not turning aside to the right hand or to the left, until we have passed through your territory.”
18
But the Edomites said to them, “You shall not pass through our land, lest we come out against you with the sword!”
19
Then the Israelites said to him, “We will go along the highway, and if we or our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. Only let us pass through on foot; that is all.”
20
But they answered, “You shall not pass through.” So the Edomites came out against them with many people and with a strong army.
21
When the Edomites would not allow the Israelites to pass through their territory, the Israelites turned away from them.
22
After they set out from Kadesh, the whole congregation of the Israelites came to Mount Hor.
23
Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron near Mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom:
24
“Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against My command near the waters of Meribah.
25
Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor;
26
strip Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. Then Aaron shall be gathered to his people and die there.”
27
So Moses did as the LORD commanded. They went up to Mount Hor while the whole congregation watched.
28
Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. Then Aaron died on the top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
29
When the whole congregation saw that Aaron had died, all the Israelites mourned for Aaron thirty days.
💧⛰️⚰️ Summary of Numbers 20 – Moses’ Error and the End of an Era
Numbers 20 is one of the most emotional and critical chapters in the journey of the people of Israel. In this chapter, three major events take place:
- The death of Miriam,

- However, Moses struck the rock twice with the staff and said angrily:
“Listen, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?”
💥 As a result:
- The Lord was angry with Moses because:
He did not honor the holiness of the Lord before the people.
He struck the rock instead of speaking as commanded.
- The Lord punished Moses and Aaron:
“You will not bring this people into the land that I have given them.”
🎯 Spiritual leadership requires complete obedience and the sanctifying of character, even under pressure.
📌 3. Edom’s Refusal (verses 14–21)
- Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom (a descendant of Esau), asking permission to pass through their territory, but was firmly refused.
- Israel did not force the way, and turned aside.

📌 4. Aaron’s Death on Mount Hor (verses 22–29)
- The Lord commanded that Aaron go up Mount Hor with Moses and Eleazar.
