1
While Israel was staying in Shittim, the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.
2
These women invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate of the sacrifices and bowed down to their gods.
3
When Israel joined itself to Baal-Peor, the anger of the LORD burned against Israel;
4
and the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and hang them before the LORD in the open sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.”
5
Then Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal-Peor.”
6
Just then one of the Israelites came and brought a Midianite woman to his relatives, in the sight of Moses and of all the congregation of the Israelites, who were weeping at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
7
When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation and took a spear in his hand,
8
and followed the Israelite into the inner room, and pierced them both, the Israelite and the woman, through her body. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped.
9
Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
10
The LORD said to Moses:
11
“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the Israelites, because he was zealous for my honor among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in my jealousy.
12
Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace,
13
a covenant of a lasting priesthood for him and for his descendants after him, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.'”
14
The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, a leader of a Simeonite clan.
15
The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi daughter of Zur; he was the head of a people, a clan in Midian.
16
Then the LORD said to Moses:
17
“Harass the Midianites, and strike them down,
18
for they harassed you with their schemes against you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed on the day of the plague because of Peor.”
🔥⚔️💔 Summary of Numbers 25 – The Sin of Peor and Zealous Priesthood
Numbers 25 shows the dark side of the Israelites: they fell into sexual sin and idolatry. After the spiritual victory and blessing prophecy of the previous chapter, they now fell into the trap of Moab, the result of a deception referred to in Revelation 2:14 as “the teaching of Balaam.”
📌 1. Israel Commits Harlotry and Worships Baal-Peor (verses 1–5)
- At Shittim, Israel began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.
“Seize all the leaders of the people and hang them before the Lord.”
- Moses commanded the judges of Israel to put to death the people who had joined in worshiping Baal-Peor.
🎯 Sexual sin and idolatry often come together as a form of spiritual unfaithfulness.
📌 2. Phinehas’ Bold Action in Stopping God’s Wrath (verses 6–13)
- In the midst of the people’s weeping before the Tent of Meeting, an Israelite brought a Midianite woman into his tent openly.
- Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, immediately took a spear, went into the tent, and pierced both of them to death.
- This act stopped the plague that was striking Israel. However, 24,000 people had died.
The Lord said that Phinehas had “shown zeal for God’s jealousy” and therefore was given:
- A covenant of peace, and
- A covenant of an everlasting priesthood for his descendants.
🎯 Holy zeal for the purity of faith is greatly valued by the Lord.
📌 3. The Identity of the Israelite and the Midianite Woman (verses 14–15)
- The Israelite man was named Zimri, from the tribe of Simeon.
- The Midianite woman was named Cozbi, the daughter of a tribal leader.
📖 This was not merely a personal scandal — but a betrayal of faith and nation.
📌 4. The Command Against the Midianites (verses 16–18)
- The Lord commanded:
“Be hostile to the Midianites… for they have led you astray by their deceit through Kozbi.”
🎯 Temptation often comes through relationships that seem harmless, yet lead into unfaithfulness to God.
📖 Main Teaching
- After great blessing, a great test can come — in the form of worldly temptation.
- Sexual sin and idolatry are forms of betrayal against God’s love.
- Phinehas became an example of spiritual courage that defended holiness amid compromise.
- God’s mercy comes through decisive action against sin.
- True leadership is seen in a holy zeal for the honor of God.
✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
- Phinehas is a picture of Christ, who bore the people’s sin and turned away God’s wrath (see Romans 3:25).
- “The teaching of Balaam” is mentioned in Revelation 2:14 — that is, leading the people astray through sexual and spiritual compromise.
- We are called to holy zeal, not compromise.
- True faith must guard purity, both moral and worshipful.
