After that plague, the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest:

“Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their clans, all who are able to go to war among the Israelites.”

So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to them on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan at Jericho:

“Take a census of all those twenty years old and upward!” — as the LORD had commanded Moses.
These are the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt:

Reuben was Israel’s firstborn; the sons of Reuben were: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;

of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; and of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.

These were the clans of the Reubenites, and those registered of them numbered forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

The son of Pallu was Eliab,

and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram, the chosen men of the congregation, were the ones who opposed Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they rebelled against the LORD,

and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the two hundred and fifty men were consumed by fire, so that they became a warning.

But the sons of Korah did not die.
12
The sons of Simeon, by their clans, were: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites;
13
of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; and of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites.
14
These were the clans of the Simeonites, twenty-two thousand two hundred.
15
The sons of Gad, by their clans, were: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites;

of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; of Eri, the clan of the Erites;
17
of Arod, the clan of the Arodites; and of Areli, the clan of the Arelites.

These were the clans of the sons of Gad, and those registered of them numbered forty thousand five hundred.

The sons of Judah were Er and Onan; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

The sons of Judah, by their clans, were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; and of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.

The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; and of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites.

These were the clans of Judah, and those registered of them numbered seventy-six thousand five hundred.

The sons of Issachar, by their clans, were: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the clan of the Puvites;

of Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; and of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites.

These were the clans of Issachar, and those registered of them numbered sixty-four thousand three hundred.

The sons of Zebulun, according to their clans, were: from Sered, the clan of the Seredites; from Elon, the clan of the Elonites; and from Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites.

These were the clans of the Zebulunites, and those numbered from them were sixty thousand five hundred.

The descendants of Joseph, according to their clans, were Manasseh and Ephraim.

The sons of Manasseh were: from Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir became the father of Gilead; from Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.

These were the sons of Gilead: from Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; from Helek, the clan of the Helekites;

from Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; from Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites;

from Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and from Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites.

Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; and the names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

These were the clans of Manasseh, and those numbered from them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred.
35
These were the sons of Ephraim, according to their clans: from Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; from Becher, the clan of the Becherites; and from Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.

And these were the sons of Shuthelah: from Eran, the clan of the Eranites.

These were the clans of the sons of Ephraim, and those numbered from them were thirty-two thousand five hundred. These were the sons of Joseph according to their clans.

The sons of Benjamin, according to their clans, were: from Bela, the clan of the Belaites; from Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; from Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites;

from Shupham, the clan of the Shuphamites; and from Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites.

And the sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman; from Ard, the clan of the Ardites; and from Naaman, the clan of the Naamites.

These were the sons of Benjamin according to their clans, and those numbered from them were forty-five thousand six hundred.

These were the sons of Dan, according to their clans: from Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These were the clans of Dan according to their clans.
43
All the clans of the Shuhamites, those numbered from them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred.
44
The sons of Asher, according to their clans, were: from Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; from Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; and from Beriah, the clan of the Beriites.

Of the sons of Beriah: from Heber, the clan of the Heberites; and from Malchiel, the clan of the Malchielites.
46
And the name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.
47
These were the clans of the sons of Asher, and those numbered from them were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
48
The sons of Naphtali, according to their clans, were: from Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; from Guni, the clan of the Gunites;

from Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites; and from Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites.

These were the clans of Naphtali according to their clans, and those numbered from them were forty-five thousand four hundred.

These were the registered men of the Israelites, six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty in number.

The LORD spoke to Moses:

“To these tribes the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the names of those who were registered;
54
to the larger number you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller number you shall give a smaller inheritance; to each tribe, according to the number of those registered, shall its inheritance be given.
55
But the land shall be divided by lot; according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall receive their inheritance;
56
as the lot determines, so shall each tribe’s inheritance be divided, between the larger and the smaller number.”
57
These were the registered men of the Levites, by their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; and of Merari, the clan of the Merarites.

These were the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, and the clan of the Korahites. Kohath was the father of Amram.

The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and to Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and Miriam, their sister.

To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61
But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD.
62
And those registered among them numbered twenty-three thousand, all males one month old and upward, for they were not registered among the Israelites, because no inheritance was given them among the Israelites.
63
These were those registered by Moses and the priest Eleazar, when they registered the Israelites on the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
64
Among them there was not one of those registered by Moses and the priest Aaron, when they registered the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai
65
for the LORD had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” Not one of them remained alive except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
📋👥📊 Summary of Numbers 26 – The Census of Israel’s New Generation
Numbers 26 is the record of the second census of the people of Israel, taken after the great plague in the previous chapter (Numbers 25) had destroyed 24,000 people.
This census reflects a transition of generations — from those who came out of Egypt to the new generation that would enter the Promised Land.
📌 1. The Command to Take a Census (verses 1–4)
- After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar:
“Count all the men of Israel… from twenty years old and upward, who are able to go to war.”
- This was done on the plains of Moab, beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
🎯 The Lord counts His people — because every person matters and is part of His plan.
📌 2. The Census Results: 12 Tribes of Israel (verses 5–51)
- Each tribe was counted one by one, beginning with Reuben, then Simeon, and so on.
- The tribe of Levi was not counted as part of the army, because they were assigned to special sacred duties.
- Total number of Israelite men: 601,730.
📉 Compared with the first census (Numbers 1:46), the number had decreased slightly from 603,550. This shows how many people had perished in the wilderness because of disobedience.
🎯 The new generation was more ready to obey and enter the Promised Land.
📌 3. Arrangements for the Division of the Inheritance (verses 52–56)
- The Lord commanded:
“The land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names.”
- The land was allotted according to the number of members in each tribe and distributed by lot, according to the Lord’s instruction.
🎯 Our heavenly inheritance is promised as well — not based on strength, but because of God’s covenant.
📌 4. Special Note: None Remained from the Older Generation (verses 63–65)
- Of all those listed, none remained from the first census, except Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh.
- All the others perished in the wilderness because they did not obey.
🎯 Only faith and obedience keep a person within God’s promise.

- Disobedience brings spiritual death and the loss of inheritance.

- This census becomes a symbol that God does not forget who belongs to Him, and not everyone who begins a spiritual journey will finish it in faith.
- Caleb and Joshua are a picture of believers who remain faithful amid unfaithfulness.
