Then the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, of the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph, drew near — and the names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah —

and they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest, and before the leaders and all the congregation, at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and said:

“Our father died in the wilderness, though he was not among the company that banded together against the LORD, the company of Korah; but he died for his own sin, and he had no sons.
4
Why should our father’s name be taken away from among his clan because he had no son? Give us a possession among our father’s brothers.”

So Moses brought their case before the LORD.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses:

“The daughters of Zelophehad speak rightly; you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer to them the inheritance of their father.
8
And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying: If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
9
And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
10
And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.
11
And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, that he may possess it.”
This shall be for the people of Israel a statute of law, as the LORD commanded Moses.
12
The LORD said to Moses: “Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and look at the land that I have given to the people of Israel.
13
When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered.
14
For in the strife of the congregation in the wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against My command to show My holiness before their eyes by that water.” This was the waters of Meribah near Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.

Then Moses said to the LORD:
16
“Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint over this congregation a man
17
who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep without a shepherd.”
18
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him,
19
have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before the whole congregation, and give him your charge in their sight.
20
You shall put some of your authority on him, so that the whole congregation of Israel may listen to him.
21
He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD; at his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel, the whole congregation.”
22
So Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before the whole congregation,

and he laid his hands on him and gave him his charge, as the LORD had spoken through Moses.

Numbers 27 contains two important events:
- The five daughters of Zelophehad came to Moses demanding inheritance rights, though they had no brothers.

📖 The LORD established a new law: if a man has no son, the inheritance may be given to his daughters.

📌 2. Moses Is Told That He Will Not Enter the Promised Land (verses 12–14)
- The Lord commanded Moses to go up to Mount Abarim to see the Promised Land from afar.
- However, Moses would not enter it because of his error at Meribah, when he struck the rock instead of speaking as the Lord had commanded (Numbers 20).
🎯 Even a great leader is subject to God’s justice, though he remains beloved.

- Moses, showing a shepherd’s heart, pleaded:
“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over this people…”

- Moses laid his hands on Joshua before all the people, and Eleazar the priest supported the ceremony.
