Psalms 131 – Surrendering to the LORD

1
A Song of Ascents of David.

LORD, my heart is not haughty,
nor are my eyes lofty;
neither do I concern myself with great matters,
or with things too wonderful for me.

2
Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul;
like a weaned child with its mother,
yea, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3
O Israel, hope in the LORD
from this time forth and forevermore!

🕊️🙏📖 Summary of Psalm 131 – “Quiet as a Child with Its Mother”

Psalm 131 is the twelfth Song of Ascents, brief yet deeply spiritual.
This psalm speaks of humility, surrender, and a quiet soul that rests fully upon the Lord — like a weaned child in its mother’s arms.

Written by David, this psalm becomes a remarkable lesson in mature spirituality: humble, calm, and trusting.

📌 1. Humility before God (verse 1)
➡️ “LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor are my eyes lofty; neither do I concern myself with great matters, or with things too wonderful for me.”

🎯 David chooses not to be proud in mind or spirit — he knows his limits as a man.

📌 2. A Quiet and Trusting Soul (verse 2)
➡️ “Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, yea, like a weaned child is my soul within me.”

🎯 The most intimate picture of peace of soul: not restless, not demanding, content with the presence of the Lord.

📌 3. A Call to Hope in the Lord (verse 3)
➡️ “O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore!”

🎯 The Lord alone is worthy to be trusted — not our own strength, not our own understanding.

📖 Main Teaching

  • Humility is the foundation of spiritual maturity
  • The one who trusts in the Lord is not anxious, even when he does not know everything
  • Peace of soul comes from closeness with God, not from knowledge or achievement
  • True hope is found only in the Lord — not in one’s own ability
  • Mature spirituality is simple, deep, and steady
