In a world that is instant and full of the search for “wow” experiences, we often bring that mindset into our spiritual lives. We want worship that is “moving,” prayers that “touch the heart,” and God’s presence that “feels real.” But let us honestly ask: Am I truly seeking God, or merely chasing spiritual sensations?
Of course, there is nothing wrong with experiencing extraordinary moments with God, tears in prayer, His gentle presence, or a real miracle. But the danger comes when we make those experiences the measure of God’s presence. We begin to think: If I do not cry, is God present? If I do not get goosebumps, is God speaking?
God is not always present in the roar; sometimes He is found in the silence. In 1 Kings 19:11-12, Elijah sought God in the great wind, the earthquake, and the fire. But God was not there. He was present in a gentle whisper. Elijah almost missed Him because he was waiting for the spectacular, not the quiet.
The same is true for us. If we only seek dramatic experiences, we can become trapped in the pursuit of sensations, not the person of God. We become like someone who loves the atmosphere of prayer more than the One who owns prayer. We become thirsty for effects, not for the Word.
Jesus Himself said in John 4:23-24, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.” It does not mention atmosphere, mood, or emotional experience, but rather the authenticity of the heart and truth. That is true worship.
God is a person, not a feeling. He can be present in a grand worship service or in a quiet prayer in a room. He can speak through a worship song, but also through silence and the Word read in secret. Seeking God means pursuing who He is, not only what we can feel.
Let us reflect: do I long more for God, or only for the touching atmosphere that comes with Him? Am I still faithful when there is no thrill, no spectacular answer, no tears? True faith endures even when the heart feels dry, because it knows that God is present, even when He is not felt.
Lord, I do not want to seek only spiritual feelings. I long for You, for Your very person. Teach me to worship in spirit and truth, not in the pursuit of sensations. Even when You seem silent, I still believe You are near. Amen.
