Being thankful when a prayer is answered, when a miracle happens, or when something good comes into life is natural. But what if there is still no answer? What if the situation has not changed, the prayer still feels suspended, and the way out is not yet visible? Can we still be thankful… even before we see the answer?
In a world that teaches, “see first, then believe,” God invites us to a different path: believe first, then give thanks. That is faith. True faith does not wait for visible proof, but trusts the One who has promised, even when there are no signs of change yet.
The best example of this is Jesus Himself. Before Lazarus was raised, Jesus gave thanks first. John 11:41 records, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.” Yet at that moment Lazarus was still dead. But Jesus knew whom He was asking, and that is why He gave thanks first.
Being thankful before seeing the answer is a declaration of faith and full trust in God’s character. We may not yet know how God will work, but we know He is good, faithful, and never neglects His promises.
In Philippians 4:6, Paul writes, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” Interestingly, thanksgiving here accompanies the request, not after the answer. In other words, God teaches us to give thanks while we are still waiting.
Why is this important? Because a thankful attitude in the middle of waiting keeps our hearts tender. We do not become bitter when the time feels long, nor disappointed when His way is different from what we wanted. We can say, “Lord, I have not seen the answer yet, but I know You are working. And for that, I am thankful.”
Being thankful first also shifts our focus from the problem to the Person of God. This is not about ignoring reality, but about acknowledging that God’s power is greater than our situation. And when we give thanks first, we are building a spiritual foundation to receive the answer God has prepared, whenever and however it comes.
Lord, teach me to be thankful not only after You answer, but even before it happens. I believe You are working behind the scenes, and I choose to trust You more than my circumstances. Thank You for Your love and Your perfect plan. Amen.
