Everyone likes to receive love, but not everyone is capable of giving sincere love without expecting anything in return. True love always gives, it does not demand. Selfless love is love that sees the needs of others as more important than one’s own interests, just as the example Jesus showed.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 it is explained, “Love is patient, love is kind; it does not envy. It does not boast and is not proud. It does not dishonor others and is not self-seeking.” True love is not centered on ego, but on sacrifice. It does not ask, “What will I get?” but rather, “What can I give?”
Jesus is the embodiment of selfless love. He came not to be served, but to serve, even giving His life as a ransom (Mark 10:45). His love does not demand repayment, does not force, and never stops even though often ignored. On the cross, Jesus prayed for those who crucified Him, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). This is the pinnacle of love that willingly gives without expecting anything in return.
Loving in this way is not always easy. Ego often makes us want to be loved in a certain way, appreciated, and recognized. However, true love leads us to learn to give more than receive. When we love others, we do it not because they deserve it, but because God first loved us (1 John 4:19).
How can we have selfless love?
- Learn to see from others’ perspectives. True love is born from empathy.
- Prioritize forgiveness. Ego often wounds, but love restores.
- Live out love as action, not just feelings. Love is not measured by sweet words, but by real sacrifice.
Selfless love is a transforming power. It can tear down walls of hatred, restore broken relationships, and bring peace in a world full of self-interest. Even the smallest acts of love, when done with a sincere heart, hold great value in God’s eyes.
Let us reflect, “Has my love so far demanded more than it has given?” If so, now is the time to learn to love with the pure love of Christ, a love that does not seek its own advantage.
