Should Everything Be Prayed Over First?

Many believers often ask: must every decision, even the small ones, always be prayed over first? For example, before eating, before working, before shopping, or even before buying clothes. Does God want us to pray about every little thing, or only the big things?

1. Prayer Is a Way of Life, Not Just a Ritual

The Bible reminds us, โ€œPray continuallyโ€ (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This verse does not mean we must close our eyes and fold our hands every minute, but rather shows that prayer is a continual heart attitude connected to God. So, the point is not that everything must be prayed over in a formal way, but that every aspect of life should be lived with awareness of the Lordโ€™s presence.

2. Big Things and Small Things Are the Same Before God

We often think only big decisions need prayer: choosing a life partner, deciding on a job, or taking a ministry step. Yet Godโ€™s Word reminds us, โ€œPray at all times in the Spirit with all prayer and supplicationโ€ (Ephesians 6:18). That means nothing is too small to bring before God. Even Jesus taught a simple prayer such as a prayer before a meal (Matthew 14:19).

God cares about every detail of our lives, including the small things. Making it a habit to involve God in small things helps us become accustomed to relying fully on Him in bigger things.

3. Not Fear of Being Wrong, but Practice in Intimacy

Many people misunderstand this and think that if they do not pray about everything, they may be sinning. But prayer is not merely an obligation; it is a loving relationship with the Father. Just as a child speaks with their parents, we too are invited to speak with God in every situation.

Philippians 4:6 says, โ€œDo not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.โ€ So prayer is an expression of intimacy, not fear.

4. There Is a Time to Pray, and a Time to Act

However, this does not mean we may not act before praying in a formal sense. Sometimes simple everyday decisions can already be made based on the wisdom God gives. For example, choosing a lunch menu does not always need to wait for a direct word from God, but it can still be done with a thankful heart.

James 1:5 affirms that wisdom comes from God. If we walk in the wisdom He has already given, then many small decisions can be made peacefully. But when we are unsure or facing choices that could affect our lives and faith, prayer becomes the primary step that should not be missed.

5. Conclusion

So, not everything always has to be prayed over in a formal way before it is done, but everything should be lived in a spirit of prayer. That means our hearts are always connected to God, in both small and big matters.

Prayer is not only about asking, but also about involving God, giving thanks, and depending on Him at all times. The more we grow accustomed to living in prayer, the more easily we will experience peace in every decision.

Living in prayer means:

  • We entrust the big things fully to God.
  • We handle the small things with a thankful heart.
  • Every decision is grounded in wisdom and relationship with the Lord.

In this way, our lives will be increasingly filled with intimacy with the Father who always cares about every detail of our lives.
