The Content of the Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into the realm of the dead,
on the third day He rose again from the dead,
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty,
and from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Many Christians may often hear the term “the Apostles’ Creed”, especially when reading a confession of faith in church or in the liturgy. But do we truly understand what it means? Is it merely an old tradition, or is it actually the heart of the Christian faith that remains relevant today?
What Is the Apostles’ Creed?
The term “Apostles’ Creed” refers to the Apostles’ Creed, which emerged as a statement of faith of the early church. Although it was not written directly by the apostles, the content of this confession was formulated based on their teaching as recorded in Scripture. Its purpose is simple yet profound: to summarize the core of the Christian faith so it can be easily understood, taught, and held by all believers.
This confession is usually divided into three major parts:
- About God the Father who created heaven and earth.
- About Jesus Christ the Son of God, Lord and Savior, who suffered, died, rose again, and ascended into heaven.
- About the Holy Spirit and His work in the church, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection, and eternal life.
This structure aligns with Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 28:19 about baptism in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Why Is the Apostles’ Creed Important?

- As a bond of unity. Although Christian denominations are diverse, many churches around the world still confess this faith together as a sign of unity in Christ.
The Relevance of the Apostles’ Creed Today
We may ask whether this confession of faith is still relevant in the modern era. The answer is: very relevant.
- Amid spiritual confusion about identity. Many people know “religion” but do not understand the essence of their faith. The Apostles’ Creed helps us return to the foundation.
- As a tool to strengthen personal faith. Confessing with our mouths is not just a ritual, but a reminder of God’s promise and love. Romans 10:9 emphasizes that with the heart we believe, and with the mouth we confess unto salvation.
- As a witness to the world. By boldly confessing our faith, just as the early church did, we are bearing witness to the living Christ.
The Apostles’ Creed Is Not Just Memorization
The greatest danger is when a confession of faith becomes only a routine without meaning. God is not looking for beautiful words without a heart, but for a confession that comes from genuine faith. Jesus Himself rebuked those who honored God with their lips, while their hearts were far from Him (Mark 7:6).
Therefore, every time we recite the Apostles’ Creed, we are invited to remember again what we believe, who the God we worship is, and what promise we hold on to.
