Many people think that the work of the Holy Spirit only happened during the time of the Acts of the Apostles. As if when the apostles were no longer around, the power of the Holy Spirit also disappeared. But is that really true? Is the Holy Spirit still working today?
The answer: Yes, the Holy Spirit is still working, even very actively.
Jesus Himself said in John 14:16-17:
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth.”
Notice the word “forever.” That means the presence of the Holy Spirit is not limited by time or generation. He is not only for the apostles but also for every believer today.
The Holy Spirit is an active Helper.
He does not passively wait in the corner of our hearts. He actively guides, rebukes, comforts, and strengthens. In Romans 8:26, the Apostle Paul writes:
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
Often in weakness, when we are unable to speak, the Holy Spirit comes as our intercessor. He knows the contents of our hearts more deeply than we imagine.
Are we still sensitive to His voice?
Often we ignore the gentle promptings in our hearts, even though it might be the voice of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not always work through thunder or spectacular signs. He can also speak in silence, in the awareness of conscience, in the prompting to forgive, give, or do what is right.
The Holy Spirit does not retire. It is we who are often too busy.
In Galatians 5:16, Paul says:
“Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
This means that the life of a believer should continually be led by the Spirit. Not only when at church, but also at the market, at home, at work, in decision-making spaces, and in everyday life.
So, do not limit the work of the Holy Spirit only to the early church history. He is still working today. He is still speaking. And He still longs to lead our lives.
The question is: are we willing to open our hearts and listen to Him?
