When God Calls Us to Be Still: Trusting His Timing in Silence

There are moments in life when we feel ready to step forward, make big decisions, or pursue something we dream of. But strangely, we instead feel a prompting from God to stop, not to move. To be still. Not to take a step yet. For some people, this feels confusing because we are used to thinking that faith is always synonymous with action.

However, the Bible teaches that stillness can also be a form of obedience. In Exodus 14:14 it is written, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” This verse was given when the Israelites were trapped at the edge of the Red Sea, with the Egyptian army pursuing from behind. Human logic said they had to run or fight immediately, but God instead asked them to be still and watch His power.

Being still does not mean being passive, but waiting with faith. There are moments when God wants us to stop our own efforts so that we can see that He is the one working. In stillness, we learn to rely on His power, not our own strength.

Isaiah 30:15 affirms, “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.”

When God tells us to be still, it is not because He wants to hinder us, but because He is training our hearts to be sensitive and trusting. Stillness gives space for God to open a way we never imagined.

We often want to get answers immediately, seek certainty, or rush toward a solution. But sometimes the best answers come when we are still before God. Being still makes us calmer, clearer in hearing His voice, and stronger to face the next step.

Jesus Himself often took time to be still and pray, even though He was surrounded by many people demanding His attention (Luke 5:16). This shows that being still before the Father is an important part of a fruitful life.

So, if right now God is not telling you to move forward but to be still, do not feel neglected.

It is precisely in the silence that God is working, preparing something greater than we imagine.

Lord, teach me to obey not only when You command me to move forward, but also when You command me to be still. Give me a heart that trusts that in the silence, You are working for me. Amen.
