The Power of Forgiveness: Healing Old Wounds

Everyone has surely been hurt. Whether because of sharp words, betrayal by a friend, disappointment in the family, or other bitter experiences. That wound may have been years ago, but it still hurts when remembered. Many people try to forget, but only a few truly heal. Why? Because wounds do not heal with time alone, but with forgiveness.

Forgiveness does not mean justifying someone else’s actions.
Many people refuse to forgive because they think it is the same as allowing injustice. But in truth, forgiveness is freeing yourself from the chains of bitterness. When we hold onto hurt, the one who suffers the most is not the person who hurt us, but ourselves.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15:

“For if you forgive others their trespasses, your Father in heaven will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

This is not merely a moral command, but a spiritual life principle. A heart that does not forgive is a heart closed to God’s restoration.

Jesus is the ultimate example in forgiving.
While on the cross, in immense suffering, Jesus still prayed:

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)

He did not wait for an apology. He chose to forgive even before people realized their mistakes. That is the power of true love. If God Himself can forgive those who crucified Him, aren’t we also called to forgive?

Forgiving is indeed not easy, but it is very possible.
Philippians 4:13 says,

“I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.”

When we surrender to the Lord and ask for His strength, we can begin step by step toward healing. We don’t have to forget immediately, but just open our hearts and say, “Lord, I want to learn to forgive.”

Forgiveness is the key to a free life.
A person who forgives does not mean they are defeated. In fact, they are victorious over bitterness. When we release forgiveness, our hearts become lighter. Peace returns. Old wounds slowly heal, and our lives can be fully restored.

Don’t wait until you feel ready. Sometimes, forgiving is a step of faith. Not because our emotions are calm, but because we believe that God will heal what we entrust to Him.
