Delay is an uncomfortable thing. We live in an instant era: fast food, instant messaging, express delivery. But when our prayers seem unanswered, when God’s promises feel delayed, we begin to wonder: “Does God hear? Does He care?”
However, the Bible shows that God’s delays are never without purpose. Often, it is during the waiting period that our character, faith, and knowledge of God are shaped.
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness, but is patient with you…” (2 Peter 3:9)
This verse reminds us that when God delays, it is not because He forgets or neglects, but because He is working in His perfect timing.
Delay is not denial.
One of the most moving stories about delay is the story of Lazarus in John 11. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, He did not immediately come. He even stayed two more days in another place. As a result, Lazarus died. To humans, this seemed like a fatal delay. But Jesus said:
“This sickness will not end in death, but is for Godโs glory…” (John 11:4)
Jesus deliberately delayed so that Godโs glory would be revealed even greater. He did not just heal the sick, but raised the dead. Delay produced a miracle far more powerful than what humans imagined.
While waiting, God is arranging something.
Often when we wait for an answer, God is actually arranging the pieces in our lives to align with His plan. Romans 8:28 says:
“We now know that God works in all things for the good of those who love Him…”
Sometimes, God needs to change our hearts first before the answer comes. Sometimes, He needs to prepare other people, situations, or even open new paths that we haven’t considered.
Delay is the place where faith grows.
During times of delay, we learn patience, trust, and dependence. Just as a seed planted in the soil does not grow overnight, faith also needs time to take root. Psalm 27:14 encourages us:
“Wait for the Lord! Be strong and take heart! Yes, wait for the Lord!”
Delay is not an empty time. It is a space where God is working on us. As we learn to wait with faith, we are growing in hope and steadfastness.
Do not be afraid when God seems silent.
If today you feel your prayers are unanswered, believe that God’s silence does not mean He is not working. Sometimes, it is in the quiet that His hand is most active arranging something beyond your prayers.
Do not give up during the waiting period. God is not only interested in the final result but also in the process of your heart. When God delays, He is preparing something greater โ and more importantly, He is shaping you.
