Faith or Instinct? Which Should We Follow?

In daily life, we are often faced with a choice: to follow the voice of faith or the voice of instinct. Instinct is the natural human impulse to survive, seek safety, and avoid risk. But faith is the courage to step forward based on trust in God, not on what we see or feel.

Instinct says, โ€œDonโ€™t do that, itโ€™s too dangerous.โ€
Faith says, โ€œIf God leads, I will obey.โ€

The clearest example is seen in the story of Peter walking on water. In Matthew 14:29-30, it is written:

โ€œJesus said, โ€˜Come!โ€™ Then Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when he felt the wind, he was afraid and began to sink, crying out, โ€˜Lord, save me!โ€™โ€

Instinctively, getting out of the boat during a storm is foolish. But Peter followed the voice of faith when Jesus said, โ€œCome.โ€ He stepped out. However, when his focus shifted to the wind and waves, his instinct took over, and he began to sink.

Faith demands trust even when logic says otherwise.
Hebrews 11:1 states,

“Faith is the foundation of everything we hope for and the evidence of everything we do not see.”

Faith does not mean abandoning common sense. But faith is when we give room for God to lead above all human logic. Faith made Abraham willing to leave his hometown (Genesis 12:1), faith made Moses brave to face Pharaoh (Exodus 3:10), and faith also made Mary accept the task of becoming the mother of the Messiah (Luke 1:38).

Instinct makes us survive. Faith makes us grow.
Many people live only based on the instinct to survive: work, play it safe, avoid risks. But they never truly see miracles because they never step beyond their own calculations.

Meanwhile, those who live by faith may face storms, but they will see God’s hand supporting them amid the wind and waves. Like Peter who was saved by Jesus when he began to sink, God never lets us walk alone.

So, which do we follow today: faith or instinct?
When we face important decisions, don’t rely only on logic and fear. Come to God in prayer. Ask for sensitivity to discern His voice. Because often, the path of faith is not always safe, but it surely brings us closer to Him.
