Many people talk about love, but not everyone lives it out as God intends. True love is not centered on self, but puts the interests of others first. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 it is written, “Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not behave rudely, it is not self-seeking.” This verse affirms that true love is always oriented toward giving, not taking.
In an increasingly individualistic world, we often see “love” that comes with conditions. People are willing to love as long as they receive something in return, or as long as they are not harmed. Yet true love, as Jesus taught, is a love that is willing to sacrifice without demanding repayment. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” Jesus’ love is the pinnacle of selfless love, because He gave Himself even for those who would not necessarily return that love.
Selfless love requires humility. We must be willing to place the interests of others above our personal desires. Philippians 2:4 reminds us, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” This does not mean neglecting ourselves, but understanding that our lives are called to be a blessing to others.
True love is also tested in forgiveness. To forgive means to release the right to retaliate, even when we feel we are right. This is difficult to do if our hearts are still filled with ego. But when we learn to love like Christ, we discover that forgiveness brings relief and peace.
Perhaps around us there are people whom we find hard to love because of differences, past mistakes, or irritating traits. In moments like that, we can choose to see them through Christ’s eyes. Lord, teach me to love sincerely and selflessly. Remove the ego in my heart that limits my love. Help me to place the interests of others above my own desires, and learn to give as You have given everything for me.
