Year after year passes, and each turn of the year often becomes a moment of reflection: What have I achieved? What failed? What needs to be improved? But there is one important question that is often overlooked: What has the Lord taught me throughout this year?
We often measure a year by achievements, yet God more often speaks through the process. Whether through failure, loss, long waiting, or even quiet moments that do not seem very “meaningful” in the eyes of the world. Every season of life has a spiritual message hidden within it, if we are willing to listen.
In Deuteronomy 8:2, the Lord reminded the people of Israel, “Remember the whole journey that you have taken… to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart.” In other words, even difficult journeys are not without purpose. The Lord allows certain things to happen not because He is far away, but because He is teaching.
Here are some spiritual lessons you may also have experienced this year:
- Learning to Wait with Faith
Many of us learn that answers to prayer are not always instant. As in Psalm 27:14, “Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart!” The Lord teaches that waiting does not mean being abandoned, but being trained to trust more deeply. - Learning That Control Is an Illusion
Our plans can fail, but God’s plans never miss. We are taught to let go of control and entrust the direction of our lives to Him (Proverbs 3:5-6). - Learning to Rely on God When Nothing Else Can Be Relied On
When finances, health, or relationships shake, many realize: only God never changes. Hebrews 13:8 affirms, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” - Learning That Love Is More Important Than Being Right
This year you may have encountered many differences, conflicts, or discomfort. But God continues to call us to love, not to justify ourselves. “And over all these virtues put on love…” (Colossians 3:14).
So, what has the Lord taught you personally this year? Perhaps it was not spectacular, but it was deeply valuable. Perhaps not in the form of answers, but in the form of character being shaped.
Before entering the new year, take time to remember, write down, and reflect on the divine lessons in your life. Because the Lord does not merely want you to reach the destination, but He wants you to be formed in every step.
