When Life Doesn’t Meet Expectations

We all have imagined how life should go. A stable career, a harmonious marriage, impactful ministry, or other dreams that seem noble. But in reality, life often takes us in a different direction. When reality does not meet expectations, our hearts can easily become disappointed, angry, even questioning God.

The Psalmist also experienced something similar. In Psalm 13:1-2, David cries out, “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” David was not okay, and he honestly expressed his feelings to God. This shows that even those close to God can feel that their lives do not meet expectations.

However, David did not stop at disappointment. In verse 6, he says, “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” This is the difference between those who drown in disappointment and those who still choose to trust even when life is not ideal. Trust in God’s unfailing love is an anchor when everything seems to go off plan.

Jesus Himself experienced expectations different from those of people. People expected the Messiah to come as a mighty king, leading a rebellion against Rome. But Jesus chose the path of the crossโ€”a path that seemed “failed” in the eyes of the world. Yet from there came eternal salvation for us all.

When life does not go according to plan, it may be the moment God is arranging something better than our hopes. Jeremiah 29:11 still applies: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope.”

If today you feel weary because life is not going according to your dreams, remember: God did not write your life story wrongly. Trust the Author who knows the end of the story even before you begin it.
