There are times when we feel disappointed because a door we hoped for suddenly closes. An application is rejected. A business opportunity falls through. Someone we trusted changes their attitude. The path that seemed most reasonable suddenly stops right in front of us. It feels as if God is silent, even though our hearts had hoped so much.
Yet often, a door closed by people is not a sign that our journey is over. It may be God’s way of protecting us from a direction that looks good, but is actually not right for our season of life. Revelation 3:7 says, “What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” This verse reminds us that the final decision over our lives is not in the hands of people, connections, positions, or the judgments of others. God still holds the key.
What is interesting is that after one door closes, sometimes God does not just open one new door. He opens several doors at once. Suddenly there is another opportunity, another offer, another path, new people, new ideas, even chances we never thought about before. At this point, the problem changes. Before, we were confused because there was no way forward. Now we are confused because there are too many choices.
This is where we need to learn to distinguish between an open door and the door God truly wants us to enter. Not every opportunity that looks good should be taken right away. Some doors open to test our wisdom. Some are attractive, but cause us to lose peace. Others are simple and not very impressive, yet they bring healthy growth.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” We may make plans. We may weigh the possibilities. We may ask for advice. But in the end, the best direction is the one that keeps us close to God.
When many choices appear, do not rush to decide just because you are afraid the opportunity will pass you by. God is not playing games with us by opening many doors. He is training us to walk in wisdom. James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask God, who gives generously. That means confusion is not a reason to panic. Confusion can become an invitation to pray more deeply.
Try asking honestly. Which door helps my character grow? Which door does not force me to compromise the truth? Which door gives room to remain faithful, humble, and responsible? Which door is not only beneficial today, but also shapes a better future?
Psalm 37:5 says, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this.” Surrendering our lives does not mean we stop thinking. Surrendering our lives means we do not make our personal desires the master of our decisions. We still consider carefully, but our hearts remain open to God’s direction.
Sometimes God closes one door because we are too small to see the future. We grieve over one opportunity, while God is preparing a wider network of opportunities. We are disappointed by the people who reject us, while God is moving us to a more fitting place. Human rejection does not always mean failure. In God’s hands, rejection can become a redirection toward a better plan.
Philippians 1:9-10 teaches that our love should abound more and more in true knowledge and all discernment, so that we may approve what is excellent. So when many doors open, ask not only for blessing, but also for understanding. Because a blessed life is not just about having many choices, but about choosing what is right before God.
Do not be afraid when one door closes. And do not become proud when many doors open. Stay calm, keep praying, keep testing everything with God’s Word, and keep listening to the peace God gives. For the God who closes the wrong door is also able to lead us into the most fitting one.
Lord, teach me not to be overly disappointed when one door closes. Give me wisdom when many doors open, so that I do not only choose what looks good, but what is right according to Your will. Guide my steps, guard my heart, and shape me to remain faithful in every season of my life. Amen.
