Not all Christians are always “on fire.” In fact, many of us have been at a point where our spiritual enthusiasm slowly fades. Prayer becomes rare, reading the Word turns into a dull routine, and ministry feels like a burden. If you are at that point, you are not alone.
In spiritual life, this phase can be experienced by anyone. But the good news is, God does not leave us there. He wants to help us rekindle the flame of faith that is beginning to die out.
The Flame of Faith Can Go Out If Not Maintained
In 2 Timothy 1:6, Paul advises Timothy, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God that is in you.” Paul knew that spiritual enthusiasm could dim if neglected. Even Timothy, a young leader beloved by Paul, needed to be reminded to “fan into flame.”
Like a campfire, faith needs fuel to keep burning. We cannot expect our faith to remain strong if we keep distancing ourselves from its source of strength.
Why Can Enthusiasm Fade?
- Spiritual or physical exhaustion. A tired body and soul cause us to lose energy for spiritual matters. Jesus Himself invited His disciples to rest for a while in Mark 6:31.
- Spiritual boredom. Routine without relationship turns Christianity into an empty ritual. Like human relationships, our relationship with God needs depth and intimacy, not just routine.
- Unconfessed sin. Psalm 32:3-4 shows how David felt spiritually dry when he hid his sin. Sin that is not confessed will extinguish spiritual joy.
- Unhealed disappointment. When prayers are not answered as we hope, or when facing problems in the church or community, enthusiasm can also die. Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.”
How to Rekindle the Fire of Faith?
- Start with honest prayer. Come to God and say it as it is: “Lord, I am tired. I long to burn again.” Psalm 51:12 is David’s prayer after repentance, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit!”
- Return to the Word with an open heart. Don’t just read out of obligation. Ask God to speak through His Word. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that the Word is living and powerful.
- Associate with people who can strengthen your faith. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to consider one another and to encourage each other in love and good deeds. Your faith can be rekindled through a healthy community.
- Don’t wait for enthusiasm before you act. Do what is right even if you are not enthusiastic yet. Sometimes, our actions will reignite the dormant spiritual emotions.
Closing: God Never Goes Out Even When Our Fire Is Almost Dead
If you feel far from God, it may not be because He has left you, but because you are unknowingly walking away. But do not be afraid. Even a small flame can be rekindled if blown with the right wind.
Isaiah 42:3 says, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.” God does not discard those who are almost losing their enthusiasm. He actually wants to breathe new life into your spirit.
Come to Him today. Let Him be the source of your flame of faith again. Because God still longs to see your life burning brightly and making an impact.
