For some people, the Holy Spirit sounds like a distant theological concept. However, Jesus’ promise is very personal. He said, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever—the Spirit of Truth” (John 14:16-17). The Holy Spirit is not a theory; He is a Person who dwells within believers and works now. He leads, comforts, corrects, and nurtures us to become like Christ amidst real daily routines.
Jesus added, “When He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). This is why the Word feels alive when read with a surrendered heart. The work of the Holy Spirit makes the truth not only understood but lived out. When we face difficult decisions, He helps us discern what is good, pleasing, and perfect. When the heart is restless, He reminds us of God’s promises, calms our inner being, and directs our steps.
The Holy Spirit also empowers us to bear witness. “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8).
Power here is not merely sensation, but the ability to remain faithful, to courageously speak the truth, and to love even when disliked. The sign of the Holy Spirit’s work always highlights Christ, not oneself. He shapes a character that radiates the fruit of the Spirit in daily life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). If what increases is only the crowd, but not this fruit, we need to stop and re-examine the source.
In weakness, the Holy Spirit becomes the Helper. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us” (Romans 8:26-27). When words run out, prayer does not stop. He translates the sighs of the heart into petitions that align with God’s will. On the other hand, the Spirit also seals us as belonging to the Lord. “You were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance” (Ephesians 1:13-14). There is a gentle yet firm inner assurance: we are not alone, and our future is in the hands of the Father.
Does the Spirit also give gifts? Yes, but the purpose is clear.
“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). Any gift that the Spirit gives is always directed to build up, not to divide, to glorify Jesus, not to glorify the servant. Therefore, the Bible teaches a calming balance. “Do not quench the Spirit, do not despise prophecies, test everything and hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). And also, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). The test is simple yet firm: whether it aligns with the Word, whether it exalts Christ, whether it produces the fruit of the Spirit, whether it builds up others.
How to train sensitivity to the work of the Holy Spirit today?
First, come with a prayer of surrender before engaging in activities. Say, “Holy Spirit, lead my thoughts, guard my mouth, direct my steps.” A small surrender at the start of the day sets the compass of the heart throughout the day. Second, read the Word with a simple request, “Open my eyes.” The Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures also opens our understanding of them. Third, pay attention to gentle promptings to love. When the name of someone to contact or help comes to mind, respond with small obedience.
The Spirit often speaks through impulses to do good that align with the Word. Fourth, test every impression. If an impulse makes us proud, harsh, or contradicts the Scriptures, it is not from the Holy Spirit. Fifth, walk together with the community. The voice of wisdom from fellow believers helps us distinguish which is the voice of the heart and which is His voice.
In the end, the greatest sign that the Holy Spirit is still working today is a life increasingly resembling Christ. Not just spectacular moments, but real character transformation. He ignites love when we are cold, gives self-control when emotions rise, nurtures faithfulness when boredom comes. And all this happens not because we are strong, but because we abide in Jesus and open space for His Spirit to work every day.
Holy Spirit, thank You for being present and working today. Lead us into truth, soften our hearts to obey, and produce the fruit of the Spirit in every decision. Show us the small steps we must take so that our lives glorify Jesus. Amen.
